According to the latest silicon wafer quarterly analysis report released by the Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) under SEMI, global silicon wafer shipments in the third quarter of 2024 increased by 5.9% month-on-month to 3214 million square inches (MSI), an increase of 6.8% from 3010 million square inches in the same period last year.

Chongwei Li, chairman of SEMI SMG and vice president of GlobalWafers, said: "Silicon wafer shipments in the third quarter continued the upward trend that began in the second quarter of this year. Inventory levels throughout the supply chain have declined, but are still high overall, and demand for advanced wafers used in artificial intelligence remains strong. However, demand for silicon wafers for automotive and industrial uses remains weak, while there has been some improvement in demand for silicon for mobile phones and other consumer products. Therefore, the upward trend may continue in 2025, but total shipments are not expected to return to the peak level of 2022 yet."

Data cited in this release include polished silicon wafers, including those used as virgin test wafers, as well as epitaxial silicon wafers, and non-polished silicon wafers shipped by the wafer manufacturers to end users.

Silicon wafers are the basic material for most semiconductors and are an important component of all electronic products. Highly engineered wafers can be up to 12 inches in diameter and are used as the substrate material for manufacturing most semiconductor devices.
