Fire, needle puncture, and corrosion soaking are nothing. The solid-state battery developed by Chery Automobile can still charge and discharge normally even if a corner is cut off. At the 2024 Chery New Innovation Conference held recently, Chery officially announced that this advanced solid-state battery will be installed in vehicles in 2026. By then, the range of pure electric vehicles will usher in a major breakthrough and is expected to reach more than 1,500km.



Mainstream ternary lithium/lithium iron phosphate batteries have limited battery life and are at risk of spontaneous combustion


At present, both ternary lithium and lithium iron phosphate batteries use liquid electrolytes, which are prone to form lithium dendrites during the charging and discharging process. Once the lithium dendrites pierce the diaphragm and cause a short circuit between the positive and negative electrodes, the battery may burn or even explode. In recent years, spontaneous combustion of electric vehicles is not uncommon, which is one of the reasons why many car owners still stick to fuel vehicles.



The second is the problem of battery life. The battery life of models such as Model Y, Xiaopeng G9 ( parameters | inquiry ), and Tang EV is generally concentrated at around 700km, which is obviously inferior to the 1,200km+ battery life of extended-range models. Coupled with factors such as reduced battery life in actual use, it is inevitable to feel anxious when traveling long distances.



If you want to improve the endurance of a car, a direct way is to increase the battery capacity. However, doing so will not only occupy more space in the car, but also increase the weight of the vehicle, thus affecting the overall energy efficiency and performance.



Solid-state battery: high energy density, high temperature resistance, small size

2000km driving range, battery cost is 450,000-750,000 yuan


Although solid-state batteries have many advantages, there are still some technical difficulties that prevent large-scale mass production. For example, the conductivity of electrolyte materials is low, the preparation process is complex, and precise control of temperature, pressure and other conditions are required. In addition, high cost is also one of the main obstacles.


At present, the material cost of all-solid-state batteries is about 1.5-2.5 yuan/Wh. If a solid-state battery vehicle is to have a range of 2,000 km, assuming 15 kWh of electricity is consumed per 100 km, the total energy of the battery pack will reach 300 kWh. Therefore, the material cost of solid-state batteries alone may be as high as 450,000-750,000 yuan.



Conclusion: Although automakers such as Chery, Toyota and BMW have officially announced that the solid-state batteries they have developed will be installed in vehicles in the next two years, it is important to note that you should not be "confused" by the term "installed in vehicles". Chery's solid-state battery will not be mass-produced until 2027. At the same time, given the high cost of batteries, solid-state batteries are obviously not suitable for most ordinary consumers in the short term, so the wait-and-see party should just disband.
