According to a report by German magazine Manager Magazine on February 17, Volkswagen is in talks with China's Huawei to acquire its autonomous driving division. Sources said Huawei and Volkswagen have been in talks for several months and the deal could be worth billions of euros. If so, the final transaction price will easily exceed 10 billion yuan. Volkswagen has previously announced plans to invest nearly $100 billion in autonomous driving, aiming to lead what many believe to be the future of mobility.

Manager Magazine cited internal sources as saying that Volkswagen Group leaders have been negotiating the deal for several months, which also involves technical systems that Volkswagen is not yet proficient in. A Volkswagen spokesman declined to comment. Huawei has not responded to this yet.

So far, the activities of Chinese giant Huawei Technologies in the automotive market have been limited to cooperation with partners. For example, Huawei is developing hybrid cars with a proprietary operating system HarmonyOS together with Seres. At the same time, by the middle of this century, Huawei is expected to develop a top-level autonomous driving system. In the Chinese market, which is the most important market for Volkswagen, Huawei has always been the representative of top technology. If Volkswagen acquires Huawei, it will be helpful to reshape its leading brand image in the Chinese market.

Intelligent driving is considered to be the core of future competition in the automotive industry. Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen, said in a question-and-answer session on the American social media platform Reddit on February 16 that he expects the automotive industry to popularize autonomous driving technology within 25 years, and the company is seeking to establish new partnerships to increase self-sufficiency in the software field. This "further cooperation" was then revealed to be a discussion on the possibility of a deeper transaction with Huawei.

According to previous plans, Volkswagen Group's goal is to increase the proportion of self-developed software in the group's cars to 60% by 2025 (this figure was less than 10% in 2020). Software has always been one of Volkswagen's weaknesses. Especially when the ID.3 was launched, this problem was vividly demonstrated. Not only was the launch of the car delayed many times due to software problems, but the first ID.3 to roll off the assembly line was even a "bare metal" car without a system.

But Volkswagen is also rapidly strengthening its software capabilities. Subsequently, Volkswagen formed a large software team. At the end of 2020, Volkswagen said in a latest statement that investment in electric vehicles, autonomous driving and related future technologies will increase to about $86 billion, reaching half of the company's 150 billion euro budget by 2025. At the same time, the Volkswagen Group will double its future digital investment budget to about $32 billion to develop core software such as automotive operating systems.

China's huge automobile market, as well as the rapid development in new energy, autonomous driving, smart cockpits, and fierce competition, require advanced intelligent capabilities to achieve software self-sufficiency. Huawei currently claims to be a Tier 1 or Tier 2 in the automotive industry, providing OEMs with technologies such as smart cockpits, autonomous driving, and electric drive systems. Its current partners include Arcfox, which cooperates with BAIC to carry Huawei's full range of autonomous driving products, and the M5 with HarmonyOS smart cockpit developed with SERES. Models in cooperation with GAC and Changan are also under development. In addition, according to media reports, the Audi brand under the Volkswagen Group is cooperating with Huawei to equip its A6 and other models with Huawei's ADS high-level autonomous driving system. The system is a point-to-point L2 system for cities. Audi A6 models with Huawei ADS logo can currently be seen near Huawei's Shanghai R&D Center.

Some analysts pointed out that if Huawei sells its core autonomous driving assets, it means that Huawei will get rid of the embarrassment of how to acquire customers. Huawei is currently trying to sell its autonomous driving package to car companies, but autonomous driving has always been regarded as the "soul" by car companies and they prefer to develop it themselves, so Huawei also faces the problem of developing new customers. After selling this asset, Huawei can focus more on making its components, or directly enter the "car manufacturing" stage. Thus, it will no longer waver in the choice of road.

In response to market rumors that "Volkswagen is negotiating with China's Huawei and is interested in acquiring Huawei's autonomous driving division for billions of euros", Volkswagen China officially responded, "no comment."
