On September 2, Velodyne announced that it will showcase its innovative lidar technology at IAA Mobility in Munich, demonstrating its technological leadership and product breadth in lidar sensors and software. Velodyne's solutions can power autonomous driving applications and promote the development of safe, sustainable and accessible travel and infrastructure.
Velodyne executives will highlight how Velodyne solutions improve performance, ranging, and reliability to support customers’ next-generation infrastructure and mobility applications. They will also discuss Velodyne’s portfolio of compact solid-state sensors that can be embedded and well integrated into vehicle and robotic applications.
“At IAA Mobility, we will showcase Velodyne’s sensors and software, addressing a wide range of customer needs and powering safe mobility and smart city infrastructure around the world,” said Erich Smidt, Vice President, Europe, Velodyne Lidar. “Our partners NI and Seoul Robotics, who are recognized leaders in high-quality solutions at the forefront of the market for future autonomous driving solutions, will also be on display at our booth, designed to improve people’s lives and make communities safer.”
Partners showcase lidar-based solutions
NI, a developer of automated test and automated measurement systems, will co-exhibit at the Velodyne booth. NI will demonstrate simulations that optimize Velodyne lidar sensors, which are used to develop and test advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV) features. NI simulation solutions make it easier to integrate Velodyne’s sensors into vehicle solutions, thereby reducing time to market and improving vehicle safety. NI will demonstrate how its monoDrive AV simulation software creates a digital twin with Velodyne’s lidar technology and provides validated physics-based sensor models for Velodyne lidar sensors.
“Our ADAS and lidar simulation capabilities enable faster system development and deployment of ADAS and AV solutions using Velodyne sensors,” said Jeff Phillips, director of marketing for NI’s Transportation Business Unit. “NI’s monoDrive Real-to-Virtual technology provides an end-to-end solution that collects real-world data from cameras, lidar and GNSS systems to create high-fidelity digital twins that help accelerate ADAS and AV development, which in turn accelerates deployment. Combining Velodyne’s high-performance sensors with our simulation and validation capabilities enables developers to test and validate solutions under a wide range of conditions that are massively scalable before they are released.”
Velodyne’s autonomous driving partner Seoul Robotics will demonstrate its AI perception engine for Velodyne lidar sensors at the Velodyne booth, which provides real-time object detection, classification, tracking, and prediction for autonomous systems . In addition, the AI engine can also power advanced parameter monitoring systems for autonomous vehicles and smart city applications and facilities. Seoul Robotics’ SENSR™ perception software includes a fully optimized AI engine that works with Velodyne’s lidar sensor portfolio, including Puck™, Ultra Puck™, and Alpha Prime™.
Velodyne Highlights High-Performance Sensors and Software
Velodyne products on display at IAA Mobility include:
The Velarray H800 is a solid-state lidar sensor designed for automotive-grade performance and built with Velodyne's breakthrough proprietary micro lidar array architecture (MLA). The sensor combines long-range perception with a wide field of view and is designed for safe navigation and collision avoidance in ADAS and autonomous driving applications. In addition, it can enable advanced driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane keeping assist (LKA), and pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PAEB). The Velarray H800 is designed with a compact, embeddable form factor that can be neatly mounted behind the windshield of a truck, bus or car, or seamlessly mounted on the exterior of the vehicle.
The Velarray M1600 is an innovative solid-state lidar sensor designed to serve autonomous robotics applications. Built using Velodyne’s MLA, the sensor provides excellent near-field perception for safe navigation. The Velarray M1600 enables contactless mobile and last-mile delivery robots to operate autonomously and safely without human intervention. The sensor is durable and compact, and can be deployed in a variety of environments and weather conditions, allowing for nearly 24/7 use, 365 days a year.
Velabit™ is Velodyne’s smallest sensor, bringing new versatility and affordability to 3D lidar perception. This compact, mid-range lidar sensor is highly configurable for specialized use cases and can be embedded anywhere in vehicles, robots, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and infrastructure. The solid-state Velabit furthers Velodyne’s goal of making high-quality 3D lidar sensors easily accessible to everyone.
Vella™ is Velodyne's breakthrough ADAS software based on the directional view Velarray sensor, which outperforms existing camera + radar approaches and revolutionizes advanced driver assistance features currently on the market, including ACC, LKA and PAEB. The Vella Development Kit (VDK) enables companies to use the advanced features of the Vella software in their autonomous driving solutions. By reducing the time and effort required to integrate 3D lidar sensors into applications, the VDK helps companies use their development resources more efficiently.
