With the steady growth of the number of pure electric vehicles (BEVs) on the market , and the pressure from environmental protection to reduce vehicle emissions to zero, BEVs are becoming increasingly popular. Compared with internal combustion engine (IC) vehicles, one of the most criticized issues of BEVs is their range. Most BEVs on the market today have a range of about 160 kilometers (100 miles), which is enough to meet the needs of ordinary daily commuting, which is generally around 10 to 20 kilometers.

However, electric vehicles are not just for one activity. Daily commutes are often combined with school pickups, extracurricular activities, and grocery shopping. Once all these extra trips are taken into account, the battery life of an electric vehicle is running low, which makes some consumers uneasy. In addition, unlike internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles cannot be recharged in just a few minutes, as is the case with gas. For long journeys, stopping to recharge after each leg of the journey simply does not work. The current practice of refueling a car at a gas station still has its value, but perhaps more so for longer journeys. More likely, electric vehicles will be charged in parking lots or transportation hubs while we go to work or shop, ready for the next journey.

In this context, Infineon Technologies and Avnet jointly launched the white paper "Overcoming the Challenge of Fast Charging Electric Vehicles". This white paper explores the growing electric vehicle market and the new requirements it places on society - providing battery charging solutions that are as easy to use as refueling a fuel vehicle; explores the standards for electric vehicle charging and the various topologies that are emerging in this unique application field; shares experience in existing system architectures, including power conversion, payment systems and security; and reviews the electronic components, evaluation systems and supporting software that are critical to realizing electric vehicle charging systems in the next few years to support the previous analysis.
