"The ultimate form of every smart connected car should be that every screw on the car can be connected to the Internet." This is my most straightforward understanding of smart connected cars .

If screw networking is a bit difficult, what about tires ? As an important part of the car body, the intelligence of tires is easily overlooked. After all, they are the shoes of the car, not the shoes of people. However, the design, manufacturing, and even the degree of intelligent networking of tires have a profound impact on driving.

In fact, the design and manufacturing of automobile tires have always been a subject with a very high scientific and technological content. With the continuous development of science and technology, tire manufacturers who have already mastered tire technology have begun to focus on the intelligent networking of tires. For example, a giant such as Goodyear.

How to achieve rapid networking of tires ? Goodyear's current approach is very crude: install sensors on tires.

When talking about tire sensors, we have to mention the common tire pressure monitoring, which is a sensor for communication between tires and on-board computers. The sensors we mentioned today can not only communicate with cars but also connect to the manufacturer's cloud data center and can detect more information.

Goodyear smart tires equipped with such sensors can measure tire wear, load, inflation pressure and temperature, as well as road conditions in real time. The information collected can be paired with other vehicle data and connected to Goodyear's dedicated cloud-based algorithms.

The smart tire is mainly composed of a tire module and an in-vehicle central module. The tire module consists of sensors, processors and wireless transmitters installed in the tire, and the in-vehicle central module consists of a wireless receiver, processor and display device in the vehicle.

After receiving the corresponding data, the vehicle will respond and adjust its performance to adapt to the environmental road conditions or tire conditions.

“Imagine driving on a slippery, winding road on a cold day. A human driver would slow down, apply the brakes or avoid sudden turns to adjust to the road conditions,” said Chris Helsel, Goodyear’s chief technology officer. “But what about a self-driving car? The tire is the only part of the car that touches the ground, and it can transmit important information to the vehicle to improve safety and performance.”

Goodyear has now collected and analyzed a total of 3 million miles of road and field test data. Both new and old smart connected tires of the brand can reduce braking distance by 30%.

Before smart tires enter the homes of ordinary people, Goodyear and fleet operator Envoy Technologies have reached a cooperation to obtain more data for analysis and research. After replacing Goodyear smart tires, the system can intelligently predict and automatically arrange necessary tire maintenance and replacement services;

Fleet managers can use data to understand the status of tires in the fleet, the need for regular maintenance, and the status of updated appointments, thereby ensuring optimized vehicle operation and avoiding unexpected suspension of shared vehicle services due to sudden failures.
