Magna, one of the largest automotive parts suppliers, recently showed a demonstration car equipped with its latest technology e4 electric drive system at a winter test drive event in northern Sweden. The e4 electric drive system is based on the Jaguar I-PACE, but the purpose of this car is to demonstrate Magna's scalable and modular electric vehicle drive system.
The system has greatly improved the efficiency, driving dynamics and driving range of electric vehicles. Models equipped with this system can increase their pure electric range by up to 120km under WLTP conditions. Take the Jaguar I-Pace as an example. The current model has a pure electric range of 470km under WLTP conditions, but after using the new system, the pure electric range of the car can be increased to 590km, an increase of about 25.5%.
The e4 electric drive system is equipped with an electric motor on each axle, forming a dual-motor all-wheel drive system. The front unit is equipped with a mechanical differential, while the rear unit is equipped with a dual-clutch torque vectoring system, which includes Magna's electric motor, gearbox, inverter and vehicle control strategy software. In addition to the e4 electric drive system, Magna has also developed the e23.cn electric drive system, which is the latest example of Magna's modular and scalable powertrain solutions, which can be equipped with 8 different powertrain configurations in a single vehicle architecture.
Magna's president said it will offer a strong product portfolio covering a variety of powertrain types to reduce CO2 emissions, support sustainable development goals and increase driving pleasure, and lead automakers in completing powertrain transformation through modular and scalable powertrain configurations.
