ANADIGICS, Inc. has released its latest upstream channel RF amplifier , which is suitable for DOCSIS-compatible cable modems, cable set-top boxes (STBs), residential gateways, and embedded multimedia terminal adapters (E-MTA) applications. ANADIGICS ARA2021 supports the new high-power operating mode specified in the latest revision of the DOCSIS 3.0 communication standard, providing the fastest broadband upstream channel for users far away from cable TV base stations. With the industry-leading performance of this device, more network users can obtain the fastest data transmission rate and achieve a high-quality broadband experience. At the same time, ARA2021 supports "green" energy initiatives and can reduce power consumption by up to 97% in standby mode.

The DOCSIS standard is managed by CableLabs, a non-profit research and development industry association, and its development has helped cable operators evolve from just delivering television programs to full-service video, voice and data service providers. DOCSIS 3.0 is the latest version of the standard and incorporates many new features, including channel bonding technology that gives cable operators the flexibility to increase end-user data rates to 160 Mbps (downstream) and 120 Mbps (upstream).

“Industry analysts expect DOCSIS 3.0-compliant products to grow steadily over the next few years as broadband users increasingly demand bandwidth-intensive applications such as remote hard drive backup, large data file sharing, and high-definition video uploads,” said Joe Cozzarelli, senior director of ANADIGICS’ broadband RF product line. “We developed the ARA2021 amplifier to meet the demanding requirements of cable TV networks that demand the highest data rates and wide coverage to provide a satisfying broadband experience for end users.”

ARA2021 is a high linearity programmable gain amplifier that includes a digitally controlled multi-stage precision step attenuator with extremely low harmonics and excellent distortion performance at high output power levels. This performance enables the amplifier to solve the long link attenuation problem caused by directional couplers, taps, attenuators and other input losses, thereby ensuring that the base station receives high-quality signals.
