Before the introduction, we need to clarify two concepts: "screen material" and "image display technology". These two concepts are completely different. TFT, IPS, SLCD, AMOLED, Super AMOLED, Super AMOLED Plus are screen materials, while ASV, CBD, NOVA, Retina Display actually refer to screen image display technology. These two concepts are usually easily confused and should be distinguished.

  1. ASV Technology

The first thing to talk about is the ASV technology that everyone is familiar with. This term has been mentioned frequently since the Meizu M8. Many users simply think that the Meizu M8, M9 and even MX phones use ASV screens, but this is not the case. ASV stands for "Advanced Super View", a technology launched by Sharp to improve image display quality, increase screen brightness, viewing angle and contrast. From this, it can be seen that Meizu actually emphasized the "ASV" concept, but did not master the core technology itself.

Meizu mobile phone products with ASV display technology

In addition, the ASV display technology used by Sharp's original screen is based on the CPA panel, but this display technology can also be based on other than the CPA panel. At present, some domestic mobile phones use ASV technology but not CPA panels, so the display effect will be inferior.

Although the use of ASV display technology can improve the screen display effect to a certain extent, factors such as screen material and resolution often play a more important role. Take the current mainstream quad-core models (Samsung I9300, HTC One X, Meizu MX Quad Core Edition) for example, thanks to high resolution and advanced screen materials, the display effect of Samsung I9300 and HTC One X is better than that of Meizu MX Quad Core Edition. Therefore, ASV technology is not as magical as the legend says, it just plays a certain display auxiliary role.

  2. CBD Technology

CBD stands for "Clear Black Display", a technology used to enhance screen display effects outdoors, promoted by Nokia. In fact, CBD technology is not a revolutionary product or technology like AMOLED. It is just a method to improve visual image effects by reducing screen light reflection, especially the display effect under outdoor light. In this way, users can still use mobile phone applications normally in an outdoor environment with strong light.

In addition, CBD technology also helps to improve the viewing angle and contrast of the screen, making the screen color display more vivid and the screen looks brighter.

As a screen display enhancement technology, CBD is fundamentally different from the concept of screen material. For example, NOKIA Lumia 800 uses a Super AMOLED screen and also applies CBD technology to the screen, which further improves the overall display effect.

The models that use CBD technology include: Nokia C6-01, Nokia N8, Nokia N9, Nokia Lumia 800, etc.

NOVA is a new display technology currently promoted by LG. NOVA has three advantages over other screens:

①. Under the same brightness, the power consumption is lower than other screens. Under the same indoor environment, compared with ordinary LCD screens, NOVA display can reduce energy consumption by 50%. When the phone displays a full white screen, NOVA screen can also save half of the power consumption compared with AMOLED screen.

② NOVA screen is also known as high-brightness display screen. According to LG official, NOVA Display can reach 700 nits in brightness, which is higher than the 530 nits of iPhone 4 screen brightness. It is the brightest screen on the market.

③. NOVA screen has a higher pure white tone and can accurately display the primary colors of black and white, with a purer display effect.

LG Optimus Black features NOVA display technology

However, NOVA technology is basically launched by LG, and other manufacturers rarely use it. Representative models include: LG P970 (Optimus Black), the screen is IPS panel.

  4. Retina Display

Retina Display, commonly known as retina technology, is promoted by Apple and is a display enhancement technology based on IPS panels. Retina screen is an LCD screen with ultra-high pixel density. It can compress the resolution of 960×640 into a 3.5-inch display screen, making the pixel density reach 326ppi. In this way, users can get a more outstanding and delicate visual experience when using the retina technology screen.

Apple iPhone 4S and The New iPad both use Retina Display technology screens

Retina Display technology is mainly used in Apple devices, such as iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and The New iPad.

  5. Mobile Bravia Engine

Mobile Bravia Engine is also a display enhancement technology, mainly in the hands of Sony. In fact, BRAVIA is a TV brand of Sony in Japan. BRAVIA has Sony's original BRAVIA ENGINE (image processing engine), which can improve the display effect of the screen. Later, this technology was applied to Sony Ericsson's mobile phones, which is the MOBILE BRAVIA ENGINE (mobile image processing engine) we are going to talk about today.

When Sony launched the LT18i mobile phone, its display quality was once questioned by consumers because it used a TFT screen. After all, the inherent quality of TFT screens is not very high. Later, Sony announced that the product had added Mobile Bravia Engine technology, which could greatly enhance and improve the display effect. After the product was launched, through actual use, users were very satisfied with the LT18i, and changed their views on screens equipped with Mobile Bravia Engine technology.

Comparison of display effects when MOBILE BRAVIA ENGINE is turned on and off

The working principle of Mobile Bravia Engine technology is that in the process of converting data into images, a series of signal optimization is performed to improve contrast and sharpness, increase color saturation, reduce noise, repair image edges and details, etc., and then the images are presented on the screen. Therefore, the images displayed on the LT18i screen appear more vivid, sharp, detailed, and have a stronger sense of layers.

  Summarize:

The above summarizes several common mainstream mobile phone screen image display technologies, covering products from manufacturers such as Sharp, Meizu, Nokia, LG, Apple, and Sony. Display technology, as a supplement to screen materials, can enhance the screen display effect to a certain extent and make up for the inherent deficiencies in the display.

On the other hand, we also found that the best-reputed Samsung and HTC mobile phones rarely use this kind of display enhancement technology, but the screen display effects of these two products are well received, especially the recently released Samsung I9300 and HTC One X, which can be said to be the two machines with the best screen display effects. The author believes that although screen technology is important, the innate quality of the screen material itself is more important.

In addition, users should be rational when choosing materials and technologies promoted by some manufacturers. After all, product batches, later debugging and matching, and overall optimization often play a greater role. Simply considering parameters is of little practical significance.
