New math libraries provide developers with significant performance gains while maintaining ultra-low power consumption.
Texas Instruments (TI) has announced an expanded industry environment of free, easy-to-use math libraries for its ultra-low-power MSP430™ microcontrollers (MCUs), leveraging smart peripherals and optimized software to offload complex math instructions. The MSPMATHLIB and IQmathLib libraries are ideal for applications such as location tracking where performance and power consumption are critical. Now, the inverse tangent function can be used to measure headway and roll angles in a fraction of the time using the MSP430 MCU, accelerators and IQmathLib. Other ideal applications for these optimized math libraries include wireless sensor nodes, smart meters, heart rate monitors and any product that supports capacitive touch or graphics.
MSPMATHLIB is a floating-point scalar math acceleration library that completes math-intensive operations in a fraction of the time, providing developers with up to 26 times the performance. This advanced math library helps 16-bit MCUs execute code faster, extending battery life for any math-intensive application. Developers can easily configure the MSPMATHLIB software to improve performance for all MSP430F5xx, MSP430F6xx and MSP430FR5xx MCU families.
IQmathLib is now available for MSP430 MCU developers to help optimize 16-bit and 32-bit fixed-point math. This math library not only provides the same benefits as MSPMATHLIB, but also achieves up to 100 times the performance while only limiting the flexibility of the data range. IQmathLib provides all the back-end functions required to improve performance without compromising power consumption. IQmathLib is available for all MSP430 MCU families. Reference Designs to Help Jumpstart Development: TI Designs will be used to demonstrate the performance and power capabilities of IQmathLib, and will help developers jump-start system designs for a variety of sensor welding and asset monitoring applications. The reference design is a location tracker that monitors tilt, leaks and theft by processing multiple sensor inputs. IQmathLib helps the MSP430 MCU to accelerate the execution of sample code so the location tracker can return to low-power mode. This IQmathLib design includes several components of the TI MCU LaunchPad development industry environment, such as the MSP430 Value Line LaunchPad, CircuitCo's Education BoosterPack and the latest fuel tank BoosterPack from Element14 and TI.
Availability
MSPMATHLIB and IQmathLib are available now, free of charge, through TI's Code Composer Studio™ (CCS) integrated development environment (IDE). MSPMATHLIB is also available for IAR's Embedded Workbench. The two libraries can be downloaded separately.
