Gartner releases the top 10 strategic technology trends that organizations need to explore in 2025.

“This year’s top strategic technology trends cover the imperatives and risks of AI, as well as cutting-edge trends in computing and human-machine collaboration, ” said Arnold Gao, research vice president at Gartner . “Tracking these trends will help IT leaders shape the future of their organizations in a responsible and ethical way.”

The following are important strategic technology trends for 2025.

Agentic AI

Agent AI autonomously plans and takes actions to achieve user-defined goals. Agent AI holds promise for a virtual workforce that can share and supplement human work. Gartner predicts that by 2028, at least 15% of daily work decisions will be made autonomously by agent AI, up from 0% in 2024. The technology’s goal-oriented capabilities will enable more adaptable software systems that can accomplish a wide range of tasks.

Agent-based AI has the potential to fulfill the desire of enterprise chief information officers (CIOs) to improve productivity. This motivation has prompted enterprises and vendors to explore, innovate and establish the technologies and practices required to provide robust, secure and trustworthy agent-based AI.

AI Governance Platforms

The AI Governance Platform is part of Gartner's evolving AI Trust, Risk and Safety Management (TRiSM) framework. AI TRiSM enables enterprises to manage the legal, ethical and operational performance of their AI systems. This technical solution creates, manages and enforces responsible AI use policies, explains how AI systems work and provides transparency to build trust and accountability.

Gartner predicts that by 2028, companies that adopt comprehensive AI governance platforms will have 40% fewer AI-related ethical incidents than companies without such systems.

Disinformation Security

Fake information security is an emerging technology category. This technology can systematically identify trust and aims to provide a methodological system that can ensure the integrity of information, evaluate authenticity, prevent impersonation and track the spread of harmful information. Gartner predicts that by 2028, 50% of enterprises will begin to adopt products, services or functions designed specifically for fake information security use cases, compared to less than 5% today.

The widespread availability and advanced state of AI and machine learning tools being used for malicious purposes is expected to increase the number of disinformation incidents targeting businesses. If this trend is not curbed, disinformation could cause significant and lasting damage to businesses.

Postquantum Cryptography

Post-quantum cryptography protects data from the risk of quantum computing decryption. According to the development of quantum computing in the past few years, several traditional encryption technologies currently in widespread use will be obsolete. Since changing encryption methods is not easy, companies must have a longer preparation time to provide strong protection for all sensitive or confidential information.

Gartner predicts that by 2029, advances in quantum computing will render most traditional asymmetric encryption techniques insecure.

Ambient Invisible Intelligence

Ambient invisible intelligence is enabled by extremely low-cost, compact smart tags and sensors that provide large-scale, affordable tracking and sensing. In the long run, ambient invisible intelligence will enable sensors and smart technologies to be seamlessly integrated into our daily lives.

Through 2027, early examples of ambient invisible intelligence will focus on solving current problems, such as retail inventory checking or perishable goods logistics, by enabling low-cost, real-time item tracking and sensing to improve visibility and efficiency.

Energy-Efficient Computing

IT impacts sustainability in many ways. In 2024, carbon footprint will be the top consideration for most IT organizations. Compute-intensive applications such as AI training, simulation, optimization, and media rendering are likely to be the largest contributors to an organization’s carbon footprint due to their highest energy consumption.

预计从2020年代末开始将出现一些新的计算技术,如光学、神经形态和新型加速器等。这些新技术将被专门用于特殊任务,例如AI和优化,并显著降低能耗。

Hybrid Computing

New computing paradigms are emerging, including central processing units, graphics processing units, edge, application-specific integrated circuits, neuromorphic, as well as classical quantum computing and optical computing paradigms. Hybrid computing combines different computing, storage and network mechanisms to solve computing problems. This form of computing can help companies explore and solve problems, enabling technologies such as AI to break through current technological limitations. Hybrid computing will be used to create a transformative innovation environment that is more efficient than traditional environments.

Spatial Computing

Spatial computing uses technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality to digitally enhance the physical world. It takes the interaction between physical and virtual experiences to a new level. In the next five to seven years, the use of spatial computing will improve enterprise efficiency by streamlining workflows and enhancing collaboration.

Gartner predicts that the spatial computing market will grow from $110 billion in 2023 to $1.7 trillion by 2033.

Polyfunctional Robots

Versatile robots, which can perform multiple tasks, are replacing task-specific robots that were designed to perform one task repeatedly. The functionality of this new class of robots can improve efficiency and return on investment (ROI). Versatile robots can work collaboratively with humans, can be deployed quickly and scaled easily.

Gartner predicts that by 2030, 80% of humans will interact with intelligent robots on a daily basis, up from less than 10% today.

Neurological Enhancement

Neuroaugmentation improves human cognitive abilities using technology that reads and decodes brain activity. This technology, which can read a person's brain using a one-way brain-computer interface or a two-way brain-computer interface (BBMI), has great potential in three main areas: human skill enhancement, next-generation marketing, and performance enhancement. Neuroaugmentation will improve human cognitive abilities, help brands understand consumers' thoughts and feelings, and enhance human neural functions to achieve the best results.

Gartner predicts that by 2030, 30% of knowledge workers will have upskilled themselves through technologies such as BBMI (funded by both employers and individuals) to adapt to the rise of AI in the workplace, up from less than 1% in 2024.

This year’s top strategic technology trends highlight those that will bring significant change and opportunity to CIOs and other IT leaders over the next 10 years. Gartner clients can learn more in the Gartner special report “Top Strategic Technology Trends 2025.”
