Infineon's Edge Protect embedded security solution meets the requirements of system developers and regulators for consumer and industrial IoT applications
Infineon Technologies AG recently announced the launch of Edge Protect embedded information security solution. This new software solution has four types of security configurations, which can meet customer requirements for IoT applications with progressively enhanced information security functions. Edge Protect is optimized specifically for Infineon's PSoC and AIROC product families, and the new solution also offers pre-configured product security categories to meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Research from Bain & Company shows that a lack of security is a major barrier to the adoption of IoT applications; more than 70% of customers would purchase more IoT devices if information security issues could be better addressed. Infineon's new Edge Protect has built-in information security software and has passed "PSA certification" - PSA is a common information security framework created by Arm in 2018 to integrate the Internet of Things and embedded ecosystem into a common information security baseline. . With Edge Protect, consumer and industrial IoT OEMs can better protect their brands, reduce liability risks, protect their IP and bring products to market faster.
David Maidment, Senior Director of Security Device Ecosystem at Arm, said: “To continue to scale the Internet of Things, security is no longer an option, and as standards and regulations evolve, security will start at the most basic level. There is a growing need for security to be built into devices. By making new solutions compliant with the PSA certification framework, Infineon is helping the entire ecosystem put security first and launch more secure IoT devices.”
Erik Wood, Senior Director of Product Security at Infineon Technologies, said: “As a leader in the security and IoT industries, our next step is naturally to promote Edge Protect into the mass market. Edge Protect brings benefits to consumer and industrial IoT applications. With just the right amount of security, it can provide a total of four levels of security protection. We look forward to allowing more OEMs to integrate Edge Protect into their IoT devices to improve the security of environments such as homes, offices and factories.”
Edge Protect categories defined by Infineon include (but are not limited to):
•Category 1: Achieving the 1v2 level of CRA/RED/PSA certification, which requires root of trust (RoT), secure boot, firmware updates and debug access protection to ensure the security of OEM IP.
•Category 2: Requires the characteristics of Category 1 plus Arm® Trust Zone® processing isolation, TF-M secure services stack and sufficient internal memory or secure external flash serial memory interface, and meets PSA certified Level 2 standards .
•Category 3: Requires the characteristics of Category 2, plus rugged accelerated encryption operations and fault sensors, and meets PSA certified Level 3 standards.
•Category 4: Meets SESIP/PSA Certified Level 3 standards, plus adds a hardware-level isolated, synchronized redundant secure enclave with a security rating of AVA.VAN.4 for secure boot, key storage, cryptographic operations, and debugging Access control.
Edge Protect is compatible with Infineon's latest ModusToolbox™ 3.1 development platform, providing developers with a unique experience in a variety of use cases including consumer IoT, industrial, smart home and other applications. In addition to the PSoC and AIROC series products, Infineon ModusToolbox 3.1 is also compatible with embedded applications using Infineon products, including XMC™, EZ-PD™, PMG1 microcontrollers, etc.
