With the advancement of the digitalization of power grids, the impact of chips on power grids continues to deepen. The basic business units that constitute the power grid have gradually moved from the equipment level to the component level, and chips have been given more and more technological development tasks.

The basic unit for digital construction of power grids - power-specific chips

In order to meet the demand for precise measurement and control under the development of digitalization and networking of power grids, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., relying on the national key R&D plan, based on domestically produced independent CPU cores and packaging and testing technologies, concentrated the company's scientific research forces to focus on key research and development. After 5 years of research and development and multi-scenario verification, it developed the country's first dedicated power master control chip "Fuxi" based on domestic instruction architecture and domestic core.

The "Fuxi" chip uses the C-sky domestic instruction set and the Xuantie series domestic core as the computing core, ensuring the independent control of the core intellectual property rights of the chip; it pioneered the special hardware algorithm IPs such as electrical parameter calculation, power network communication, data parallel processing, and network security protection that meet the needs of power industrial control applications, effectively realizing the support of the digital transformation of the power grid for the basic computing power improvement of power equipment and network security protection needs. In terms of general computing capabilities and real-time computing of integrated services, "Fuxi" has outstanding performance advantages and low power consumption.

Independent research and development promotes localization of chips

In 2013, the "Fuxi" team developed a highly integrated, miniaturized, fast-acting, and highly reliable control and protection device called "chip protection". Compared with traditional devices, this new device is 2% smaller, consumes 85% less power, increases the action rate by 20%, has an overall protection level of IP67, and has an operating environment temperature range of -40-85°C.

On this basis, the team launched the second phase of research and development to carry out research and design of domestic power-specific chips, aiming to open a new chapter in the core components of power industrial control equipment.

The "Fuxi" chip is not only a domestically produced chip, but also a digital chip for power industrial control equipment; it not only carries the mission of localizing the core components of key power grid equipment, but also undertakes the important task of supporting the digital construction and development of the power grid, and helps the core components of key power grid equipment develop towards independent and dedicated development.

Supporting the construction of digital power grid

Since the "Fuxi" chip was applied to substation relay protection at the end of 2019, it has been successfully applied to nearly 30 types of devices in the fields of substation, power distribution, new energy, edge computing, etc., and has been recognized by industry experts and scholars and mainstream manufacturers. In the future, China Southern Power Grid will adhere to the working idea of "one successful pilot, one pilot, one promotion", gradually increase the coverage rate of self-developed chips for new equipment in multiple fields of the power grid, realize the large-scale application of domestic industrial control chips, and prevent and resolve major risks in the safe operation of the power grid.
