Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors: TDK expands its MLCC lineup with new low-resistance resin electrode products
September 14, 2021
TDK Corporation (TSE:6762) has expanded its CN series multilayer ceramic chip capacitor (MLCC) product lineup with the first product of its kind. The new 3216 size products (3.2 x 1.6 x 1.6 mm) have a capacitance of 10 μF and the 3225 size (3.2 x 2.5 x 2.5 mm) has a capacitance of 22 mm and offer low-resistance resin electrodes with low terminal resistance comparable to standard products. Mass production of the new products will begin in September 2021.
MLCCs with resin electrodes prevent short circuits in power lines. However, since the terminal electrode resistance of resin electrodes is slightly higher, the resistance must be kept low to reduce losses. TDK's new resin electrodes are covered with a resin layer on the board mounting side, which resists the bending stress of the board while suppressing the increase in resistance.
TDK expects that these products will promote the use of resin electrodes to replace MLCCs in power lines to improve reliability. Compared with conventional products, the new products have higher capacity, which helps reduce the number of parts and the size of MLCCs. In the future, TDK will continue to expand its MLCC product lineup to meet customer needs.
Glossary
Resin electrode: The standard terminal electrode has a two-layer plating structure with Cu and Ni-Sn as the base electrode, while the resin electrode is coated with a conductive resin between the two layers of plating with Cu and Ni-Sn as the base electrode.
AEC-Q200: The Automotive Electronics Council's standard for passive automotive components.
Main Applications
Smoothing and decoupling of power lines for various electronic control units (ECUs) in automobiles
Power cords for industrial robots, etc.
Main features and advantages
-
TDK's unique terminal structure enables resin electrodes to have low resistance comparable to standard products
-
The 3216 size has a 10 μF capacitor and the 3225 size has a 22 μF capacitor. The higher capacitance saves design space and reduces the number of parts.
-
High reliability, compliant with AEC-Q200 standard
