Power Integrations Launches New AEC-Q100-Grade 900V InnoSwitch3-AQ Flyback Switcher IC to Support Electric Vehicle Designs
InnoSwitch3-AQ ICs offer up to 90% efficiency, no-load power consumption as low as 15mW, and greater voltage margin for 400V and 800V batteries
San Jose, California, May xx, 2021 – Power Integrations, a well-known company in the field of high-efficiency power conversion with high-voltage integrated circuits, announced today that its automotive-grade InnoSwitch™3-AQ flyback switcher IC family has been expanded to include a 900V rated switch, providing ample margin for 400V and 800V electric vehicle inverters, battery management and thermostat applications. The InnoSwitch3-AQ product family integrates the primary and secondary controllers and safety-compliant feedback circuitry into a single IC, requiring only a few components and simple configuration to provide accurate and stable output voltages over an ultra-wide input voltage range of 30V to 1200V.
Comments Edward Ong, senior product marketing manager at Power Integrations: “New 400V EV system designs require higher operating voltages due to fault conditions and transient changes. The new 900V INN3996CQIC provides ample voltage margin to meet the stringent certification requirements of the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC), ensuring safe and reliable operation to meet the changing needs of the automotive market. The new device uses a STACKFET solution and is suitable for designs with bus voltages of 900V and above.”
The constant-voltage (CV) regulated, AEC-Q100-compliant InnoSwitch3-AQ switcher ICs achieve up to 90% efficiency over the entire load range and consume less than 15mW at no-load. For the 900V family, output power is up to 20W at 85°C ambient and 400VDC input. The new devices feature a multi-mode quasi-resonant (QR)/CCM/DCM flyback controller, a 900V switch, and Power Integrations’ high-speed FluxLink communication link for high-precision regulation in a thin InSOP24 package and reinforced insulation at altitudes up to 5500 meters. The InnoSwitch3-AQ IC operates from voltages as low as 30VDC, enabling automotive designers to use it for traction inverter emergency power applications.
The InnoSwitch3-AQ family of devices offers a variety of protection features for automotive applications, including input overvoltage and undervoltage protection, output overvoltage and overcurrent limiting, and overtemperature shutdown.

At the same time, a new design reference DER-889Q was also launched, which is a 15W power supply that supports 40VDC to 1200VDC input and 12V/1.25A output. Another reference design DER-859Q supports 30VDC to 921VDC input and a maximum output power of 30W, from which you can understand how InnoSwitch3-AQ works in 800V bus applications. Both designs use PI's StackFET technology, which can omit additional circuits. The new InnoSwitch3-AQ INN3996CQ IC is priced at $2 per piece in bulk.
