What are power semiconductors?


Power electronics and semiconductor technology play an important role in our lives:

Inverter air conditioners, inverter refrigerators, and inverter washing machines make our lives more energy-efficient and comfortable;

High-speed rail, light rail and subway make our travel more convenient;

Electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have good power and zero pollution;

Wind power generation and photovoltaic power generation clean energy make our sky bluer and water cleaner;


All of these are inseparable from motor drive technology and electric energy conversion technology. Their core is high-power electronic switches, insulated gate bipolar transistors - IGBTs .




IGBT is essentially a transistor, one of the basic units of semiconductors.



Crystal triodes entered our lives 60 years ago. On March 13, 1958, my country's first semiconductor radio was born in Shanghai. For many years thereafter, assembling an advanced 6-tube superheterodyne radio was a basic skill for radio enthusiasts.


The transistor is a major invention of the 20th century, and its invention heralded the birth of the integrated circuit.


Today, semiconductors are cutting-edge technology, with an industry size of nearly $500 billion. Within this market is a sub-market related to new energy and energy conservation - IGBT.


IGBT is an electronic switch that uses small current and small voltage to control the voltage and current in the load.


IGBT can pass hundreds of amperes of current and withstand thousands of volts of voltage, which is not easy and is the pinnacle of semiconductor technology.


Such devices can be found everywhere in your home, such as chargers, inverter air conditioners, washing machines...


IGBT is a semiconductor chip, as thin as paper, with current flowing from the back to the front of the chip. A 1 square centimeter square, 120 micron thick IGBT chip needs to withstand a high voltage of 1200V, and can properly shut off 300A current at -40 to 175 degrees. When working, a chip needs to be turned on and off tens of thousands of times per second. Such a chip needs to be packaged in the basic package of power devices, such as TO-247, which has three pins, and a gate controls the conduction and shutdown of the other two pins.



In order to make IGBT into various circuit functions or a device with higher current, people invented IGBT modules and intelligent modules with drivers.

Power semiconductors give us a green planet


Oil and coal are the main energy sources. Oil is the main energy source for transportation, and coal is the main energy source for power generation. A large amount of greenhouse gases will be produced during the combustion process.


One ton of standard coal can generate 3,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, and burning one ton of standard coal produces 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide.


Assuming your home uses 300 kWh of electricity per month, it will produce 260 kg of carbon dioxide, 130 cubic meters, which can increase the carbon dioxide concentration of 4 million cubic meters of air by 10%. (The volume concentration of carbon dioxide is 0.03%-0.04%)


It can also be estimated that one liter of gasoline produces 2.3 kilograms of carbon dioxide after combustion, which is higher than the mass of the gasoline itself.
