2024 MWCS World Mobile Communications Conference, live photo collection
Hello everyone, I am Xiaozaojun.
Last week, MWCS2024 (Mobile World Congress) was held in Shanghai. I visited the site. As usual, I will give you a brief report on the site, and then I will also send you the photos taken on site.
Let me first talk about my experience of the visit.
It rained all the time in Shanghai during the exhibition, which made the weather very gloomy and caused great complaints from exhibitors and visitors.
Judging from the overall scale of the exhibition, it has been reduced compared to a few years ago (around 2019).
There are a total of 5 exhibition areas this year (N1-N5). Although they are the same as previous years, the further you go in, the smaller the exhibition area becomes and the less popular it becomes.
Comparing the previous exhibitor list, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Intel, MediaTek and other large companies are missing, which has a greater impact on the overall scale. As for other overseas companies, I took a rough look and found that STMicroelectronics and Rohde & Schwarz came, but I didn't see much of the others.
As for domestic enterprises, the four major operators came, but the tower companies did not. Huawei, ZTE, China Information and Communications Technology, Lenovo, Ruijie, H3C, AsiaInfo, Comba, Certus, and Sitechi came. Module manufacturers, including Quectel, Fibocom, and Mega, all came. Not many small and medium-sized enterprises came. It always felt like someone was missing, but I couldn't remember who exactly was missing. (Xiaomi and Weilan, two car companies, came to join in the fun.)
The number of visitors on site was generally quite large. The first day was the most, but the second and third days were obviously less. I don't know if it was related to the weather. It is worth mentioning that there were quite a lot of foreigners on site. There were quite a few African and Central Asian customers, as well as Afghan customers, who were quite eye-catching on site.
Let’s talk about the content of the exhibition.
To be honest, I didn’t see anything new at MWCS this time, at least nothing particularly attractive. Of course, it may also be related to the fact that I have participated in many exhibitions in the past six months.
Of course, AI was the top priority. Almost all exhibitors emphasized AI and showcased the combination of their own businesses and AI. Slogans such as “All in AI” and “All for AI” were seen everywhere on site.
Companies with strong capabilities will exhibit large models. Companies without large models will exhibit AI applications or platforms. A media teacher joked that in previous years, all the presentations were "5G+XX", but this year they were all replaced with "AI+XX", and the content of the films seemed to be the same.
Then there are NTN (satellite communication) and 5G-A, which have a lot of exhibits. Especially the RedCap and synaesthesia (low-altitude economy ) related to 5G-A are a hot topic. FTTR is still being promoted, but the popularity is not as high as last year.
Other aspects are mainly related to backbone network optical communications, high-performance cluster networks, computing power infrastructure, and some security and platform issues.
As for equipment vendors, Huawei and ZTE still use the appointment system. Huawei has the largest exhibition hall and displays a wide range of things. The concept of the display content is also very high-level. It will not focus on specific technologies, but emphasizes the framework, business model, industrial ecology, etc. In addition to 5G-A, which is very popular this year, Huawei also focused on the transition from traffic management to experience management. I think there is some truth in this, and it may also be the way out for the current communications industry. I will introduce it in detail later. ZTE talked about its new large model, optical communication, and computing power. Overall, there are a lot of dry goods, which are worth recalling.
As for operators, the display content is still mainly 2B, 2C, and 2G applications. There is no gate, and you can visit it at will. China Mobile's content is relatively comprehensive and its technical system is complete. As for China Telecom, it is more focused, mainly promoting low-altitude economy, satellite ( NTN ) and quantum.
Overall, exhibitors mainly focused on the AI wave, and promoted AI-related technologies and applications. Traditional communications were becoming less and less popular, with not many highlights.
In terms of the forums held during the exhibition, there were many activities held by companies such as Huawei, ZTE, and China Mobile, and the atmosphere was quite lively. In terms of the opinions of the guests, there were relatively few golden sentences, and I personally felt that there were not many new ideas. Occasionally, the opinions expressed by representatives and experts from foreign operators were quite inspiring.
In general, the current trough of the communications industry as a whole is vividly demonstrated through MWCS. Many companies in the industry are in a difficult situation, and everyone is trying to find the second curve, hoping to use the opportunities of AI and computing power to survive the trough and wait for the arrival of 6G.
