Douglas Lighting uses u-blox NINA-B406 low-power Bluetooth module to create a new Bluetooth SIGMesh platform.

Recently, u-blox (SIX:UBXN), a global leading supplier of positioning and wireless communication technologies and services, announced that it has officially cooperated with Universal Douglas Lighting Americas, a world-leading lighting solutions manufacturer , to jointly create a new Bluetooth SIGMesh platform. The platform is based on the u-blox NINA-B406 low-power Bluetooth module and will provide comprehensive service support for building automation industries such as smart lighting, access control and energy management.

Bluetooth Mesh Networking: Ideal for Smart Lighting and Building Automation

According to the latest market research from the Bluetooth Technology Alliance, revenue from smart lighting systems is expected to grow from approximately $4.4 billion to $19 billion between 2020 and 2029. In addition to interconnecting lighting devices, smart lighting systems will also link devices such as switches, relays, and sensors that are wired or wirelessly connected.

Thanks to low-power Bluetooth Mesh technology, the battery life of wireless sensors and control units will be greatly improved , and can even provide power for more than ten years. At the same time, it can also easily realize the initial deployment of smart lighting equipment, replacement of old models, location movement and transmission node changes, thereby saving more costs for building managers and residents.

Bluetooth Mesh technology can further expand the Bluetooth coverage to the entire building by relaying transmission between its nodes. In addition, when a message is transmitted from a node in the network to the destination node, the data packet can flexibly find the best message transmission path by avoiding downtime or failure points, bypassing walls instead of passing through them, etc., thereby improving the resilience of the overall network transmission.

The many advantages of Bluetooth Mesh technology make it an ideal choice for smart lighting networks. Once adopted and deployed, these nodes can provide a wireless communication backbone for a wide variety of building automation application scenarios, thereby more reliably transmitting sensor data, device status information and commands.

Help create a Bluetooth SIG-compliant Mesh platform

The latest SIGMesh building automation platform released by Douglas Lighting complies with the Bluetooth SIG standard, so it can fully support linkage operations with a large third-party ecosystem. In order to meet technical requirements such as low power consumption, moderate coverage, and integrated antennas with uniform directional patterns, Douglas Lighting selected u-blox's NINA-B406 Bluetooth low energy module to build this new platform.

Stefan Berggren, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Short Range Communications at u-blox, said: “We are very pleased to be collaborating with Douglas Lighting to further enrich our product portfolio for wireless smart lighting applications. This also highlights the huge commercial value that standardized wireless communication technologies such as u-blox Bluetooth can bring to the current smart lighting market.”

John Cavacuiti, Vice President of Lighting Engineering at Douglas Lighting, also said: “Douglas Lighting has always been at the forefront of the industry by following the global trend of innovative Bluetooth applications. With the strong support and friendly collaboration of u-blox, a world-leading positioning and wireless communication technology and service provider, we believe that Douglas Lighting will bring more interoperable hardware options to the market based on the Bluetooth Mesh 5.0 standard, thereby providing customers with a richer product portfolio and a more open platform.
