" It is no longer a design problem to simply improve the accuracy and other parameter requirements of ADC . The comprehensive balance of indicators and the improvement of the overall system performance are what TI pursues. " - Song Haoran, business development manager of high-performance analog products in TI China, said when introducing TI's latest small pin-compatible ADC ADC3k and SAR ADC ADS8688 series to EDNChina reporters . We will share this article with you below.

In the entire industrial system, analog devices occupy a core position. Taking data converters as an example, different products will bring completely different speeds, precisions, and overall power consumption to the entire system. Any change will bring great changes to related fields. Recently, Texas Instruments (TI) released two data converter products, claiming to redefine the products, push the performance limit, and support more convenient designs. In this regard, Song Haoran, business development manager of high-performance analog products in TI China, said that simply improving the requirements of parameters such as precision is no longer a design problem. The comprehensive balance of indicators and the improvement of the overall system performance are what TI pursues.

The newly launched small pin-compatible analog-to-digital converter (ADC) ADC3k series includes 12-bit and 14-bit options with speeds up to 160MSPS, and provides dual or quad channels and LVDS or JESD204B interface versions. At the fastest sampling rate of 160MSPS, the ADC3k consumes only 200mW per channel, which is 80mW lower than similar products on the market, providing a 30% higher performance-to-power ratio; at a rate of 25MSPS, the power consumption can be as low as 44mW.

According to Song Haoran, the latest THS4541 fully differential amplifier has contributed greatly to the breakthrough improvement in performance of this series of amplifiers. It is the industry's lowest power rail-to-rail output differential amplifier, supporting excellent harmonic distortion performance of 123/-130 dBc HD2/HD3 at 1MHz, and maximizing the performance of ADC3k. Combined with the two, these devices can provide the smallest analog front-end solution with ultra-low power consumption while fully utilizing their performance levels. This series of devices is not only suitable for industrial applications such as motor control, medical imaging, and portable measurement and testing, but also for applications such as software-defined radio and MIMO communications.

Another SAR ADC ADS8688 series highly integrates more than 20 discrete components such as programmable gain amplifier (PGA), driver amplifier, multiplexer, voltage reference, reference buffer and SAR ADC on a single chip, as well as auxiliary channel input that can be directly interfaced with the ADC, helping to directly connect it to various industrial sensors without the need for signal conditioning.

"The latest high-voltage series products further strengthen TI's SAR ADC product lineup. The 8-channel ADS8688 and 4-channel ADS8684 can operate with a single 5V power supply in the range of ±10.24V, which greatly simplifies system power requirements." Song Haoran emphasized, "These devices provide the industry's lowest gain drift, offset voltage and offset drift, as well as the highest accuracy reference. By supporting a specified gain drift of 4ppm/C and an offset drift of 3ppm/C, designers can achieve high accuracy of more than 99.9% without calibrating the system for different temperature ranges, which can help customers fully expand the temperature range of industrial applications."

In order to help customers better understand the products, TI will also provide more comprehensive support for customers' application process, and TI Designs reference design is a powerful support method. Song Haoran said that TI Designs covers more and more product series, which can help customers understand product performance, advantages, and key points to pay attention to in the design process more quickly and comprehensively, allowing customers to have more time for productization or personalized design.

For ADC3k, TI Designs provides a high-performance, single-ended to differential active interface reference design TI DA-00294 , which is optimized for DC-coupled single-ended input applications and is suitable for applications such as motor control, medical imaging, and portable measurement and testing. This design can be used to accelerate the design of high-speed signal acquisition systems, supporting the 12-bit 4-channel 50MSPS ADC34J22 and THS4541 . Engineers can use this design method for any device in the ADC3k series.

For ADS8688 , TI Designs includes two reference designs: TIPD167, an 8-channel multiplexed data acquisition system for power automation , which includes theory, component selection, simulation, verification and measurement performance, etc. It provides an in-depth understanding of the method of using multiplexed ADC to compensate multi-phase metering systems, supports 0.002036° compensated phase difference with ±10V amplitude, and a typical frequency of 50Hz. Another reference design is TIDA-00164, a single-supply analog input module design for PLC applications - programmable current range (0-20mA) and voltage range (±10V) , 24V input single power supply operation, and designed to comply with IEC-61000 standards.

Over the past few years, TI has continued to push the boundaries of precision and speed in data converters. From the industry's first inductor-to-digital converter ( LDC1000 ) to the ultra-small 12-bit SAR ADC ( ADS7042 ), TI's high-precision data converters are helping customers change the face of industrial design.

According to data released by IHS in the second quarter of 2014, the global industrial semiconductor market size was US$32 billion in 2013 and will exceed US$45 billion in 2018. Among them, TI occupies about 8% of the global industrial semiconductor market share, ranking first. According to Song Haoran, TI still has considerable room for growth in the future, which is why TI has attached great importance to the industrial field in recent years. At present, in the industrial field, TI mainly focuses on four major fields: factory automation, building automation, motor drive and control, and smart grid.

Looking to the future, Song Haoran said that TI has three major goals in data converters: first, to redefine high precision and use a comprehensive balance of indicators to improve overall system performance; second, to push the speed limit and continue to provide faster speeds with industry-leading integration, high performance and low power consumption to help customers achieve more applications; third, to support more convenient design and quickly improve results through simple and easy-to-use data converter evaluation boards, circuit boards and performance development kits, while providing more TI Designs reference designs to accelerate the data converter design process.
