What are the advantages of using wide bandgap materials (WBG) in reducing losses?

WBG materials have lower intrinsic resistance than Si-based devices, which reduces electrostatic losses during continuous conduction . In addition, as switching frequencies increase and the size of magnetic components decreases, WBG technology further improves energy efficiency because the gate charge is reduced compared to silicon, and dynamic losses are also reduced.

What are the two main types of losses in power systems?

Switching and conduction.


Conduction loss is the sum of two losses: one is proportional to the system power due to factors such as the forward voltage of the bridge diode, and the other is proportional to the square of the system power, thus constituting impedance losses such as the on-resistance of the MOSFET.


A large part of the switching losses is proportional to the current and therefore to the power transferred. The other parts are constant and independent of the system power. They are caused by parasitic capacitances and charge currents and are usually proportional to the switching frequency of the system.

(1) We will announce the 12 winners on April 13
