5G has achieved new results. MediaTek helps the world's first version of 3GPP 5G NR standard to be officially completed

Last week, the 3GPP Technical Specification Group (TSG) Radio Access Network (RAN) General Assembly was held in Lisbon, Portugal. MediaTek and global technology and telecommunications leaders jointly issued a statement announcing the completion of the first version of the 5G New Radio (NR) standard.

The completion of the first version of 5G standards by 3GPP is a key milestone that will enable all parties to fully develop 5G NR in a cost-effective manner, thereby significantly enhancing the capabilities of 3GPP systems and opening up vertical market opportunities.

What exactly is 5G NR?

With the development of various smart devices, we will enter the era of the Internet of Everything in the future. 4G OFDM cannot meet the requirements of the 5G era, so 5G networks are developing rapidly. When talking about NR, we have to talk about the three major features of eMBB, URLLC, and mMTC. This means that 5G must have forward compatibility and sufficient adjustability to meet the adjustment requirements of large-scale Internet of Things, critical mission control, and enhanced mobile broadband in the future. At present, the 3GPP 5G standardization work is progressing in an orderly manner. It will become the global specification of 5G New Radio (5G NR), which is also the origin of 5G NR.

As early as February 27 this year at the MWC conference in Barcelona, ​​3GPP standard setting members, including all members of the global mobile communications industry, announced that they would fully support the accelerated standardization schedule of 5G NR and complete the first version of the implementation specifications for "Non-Standalone 5G NR" communication operations, jointly reaching a mid-term milestone. After that, the 3GPP conference was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia on March 9, and all parties agreed to accelerate the schedule for standard setting and incorporate the completed first version of the standard into the 3GPP Release 15 specification.

In addition to MediaTek, other companies participating in the conference in Lisbon include AT&T, BT, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, Korea Telecom, LG Electronics, NEC, NOKIA, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Qualcomm Technologies, Samsung, Sony Mobile Communications, Sprint, Telecom Italia (TIM), Telefonica, T-Mobile USA, Verizon, Vodafone, and ZTE.

In recent years, MediaTek has continued to expand its investment in the development of new 5G technologies and the formulation of technical standards, and has been selected for important positions in relevant organizations, including 3GPP Working Group Vice Chairman, Standards and Technology Project Rapporteur, GTI 5G Sub-6GHz Project Leader, and Chairman of the Taiwan Information and Communications Industry Standards Association.
