Recently, at BOE IPC 2024, Intel and BOE jointly introduced many cutting-edge technological achievements. The two parties integrated AI into displays and notebooks around Intel Intelligent Display Technology, and also demonstrated Winning Display 1Hz technology that reduces display power consumption by 65%, as well as a 17.3-inch FOLED notebook with folding technology, using more energy-efficient and intelligent display technology to accelerate the PC "core" and add brilliance to the "screen".

Connecting screens for the future, and working together for innovation. AI PCs require a complete ecosystem, and more importantly, partners from different fields to work together and develop together. With their deep industry experience and technical expertise, various professional teams are participating in this thin and light revolution. Just like a puzzle, each piece is crucial. Only when they fit together accurately can the full charm and potential of AI PCs be revealed.

What is it like to integrate AI into PC display technology?

Display experience, continuous innovation. Intel and BOE have a long history of cooperation, focusing on the innovation of display technology, and continuously adding to the innovation of PC display experience.

As AI is becoming more and more popular, the two parties have innovatively integrated AI technology into displays and notebooks through Intel Intelligent Display Technology (IIDT), focusing on improving image quality and reducing energy consumption, and providing notebook brand customers with excellent AI display solutions. This AI solution includes cutting-edge technologies such as ALRR, UBRR, and PixOpix. ALRR can autonomously reduce the refresh rate of the display for semi-active workloads such as video playback and browsing, thereby reducing display power consumption; UBRR detects whether the user is present through the camera and dynamically adjusts the refresh rate to further save energy; PixOptix technology significantly improves display contrast and reduces backlight power consumption.

The specific implementation methods of these technologies include: dynamically adjusting the display frequency and brightness to reduce power consumption by detecting user behaviors, such as mouse movement, head movements, and application usage; enhancing the 2K resolution to 4K in real time according to application characteristics, such as watching videos, browsing pictures, etc., but the content processed by the SoC (System on Chip) is still 2K, reducing power consumption without affecting the user experience. In daily use of the display, different areas of the screen may display different applications or content. For example, the upper part of the screen displays a video, the middle part displays text, and the bottom part displays the Windows toolbar. IIDT technology senses the content displayed on the screen and uses AI algorithms to dynamically adjust the display frequency of each area, allocating power consumption to the application display part that requires a higher frequency, thereby reducing the power consumption of the part that only requires a low display frequency, helping users save energy and reduce consumption according to their workload.

The cooperation platform between Intel and BOE covers multiple Intel processor series. Currently, IIDT 1.0 technology has been applied to the Meteor Lake platform, and IIDT 2.0 technology will be applied to devices equipped with the Lunar Lake platform. The launch of these cooperation platforms will further promote the development of AI display technology and bring notebook products longer battery life and smarter experience.

Winning Display 1Hz

How to reduce power consumption by 65%?

The display screen is one of the "big consumers" of power consumption in laptops. Excellent picture quality is often incompatible with long battery life, but the Winning Display 1Hz technology launched by Intel and BOE can greatly improve this phenomenon. This technology will be applied to Intel's future processor platform, using the LTPO architecture, with the advantages of wideband and low power consumption. Under this technology, the screen refresh rate can achieve ultra-wide frequency conversion from 1Hz to 120Hz. Especially at 1Hz, the display power consumption is expected to be reduced by 65%, and the optical Flicker performance is excellent, meeting the Intel LPDT (Low Power Display Technology) -60dB standard. The introduction of this technology ensures that users can enjoy a more comfortable visual experience while reducing energy consumption.

Foldable screen notebook innovation breakthrough

Intel and BOE jointly launched a 17.3-inch FOLED notebook between 2020 and 2022. With its innovative folding technology, it has achieved a breakthrough in physical form and brought users an ultimate experience in multiple scenarios. As the world's first large-size foldable OLED notebook, its launch not only meets the high-end market's demand for innovative display technology, but also promotes the rapid development of the entire display technology industry.

The future of the AI PC era lies in a complete, collaborative, and innovative ecosystem. Intel will continue to work with partners to bring innovation to the innovative applications of notebook products, and continue to increase the weight of thin and portable, long-lasting battery life, and excellent performance, so that AI PCs can become a powerful assistant for people in work, life, and study.
