The new FL-L series enables maximum flexibility in storing program code and parameter data in high-performance embedded systems

Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: CY), a leader in embedded system solutions, today introduced a 256Mb NOR Flash product equipped with a Quad Serial Peripheral Interface (Quad SPI). With the 4KB unified sector of Quad SPI, the new Cypress FL-L NOR Flash can provide the industry's highest read bandwidth and fastest programming speed while ensuring a compact PCB layout. By using a unified and compact physical storage sector, the flash memory can store program code and parameter data in an optimal way. The device is ideal for high-performance applications such as video game consoles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), automotive instrument clusters and infotainment systems, connected devices and set-top boxes.

High-performance systems require the highest read bandwidth for program execution, as well as small, low-pin-count packages and the fastest programming and sector erase speeds. Cypress's 256Mb FL-L Quad SPI NOR Flash provides 66 MBps read bandwidth for the fastest program execution in a 66-MHz double data rate (DDR) mode for high-performance systems. The device is available in a small 48-mm2 package , which not only saves board space but also simplifies layout. Its 0.30-ms/256-byte programming speed improves throughput, and its 50-ms sector erase time allows new data to be written quickly. The new products feature low standby current and offer a deep power-down mode to extend battery life in battery-powered applications. The FL-L NOR Flash family is AEC-Q100 automotive qualified and supports an extended temperature range of -40˚C to +125˚C.

“Designers of high-performance systems require fast, low-pin-count Quad SPI NOR Flash, and our newest FL-L Flash is tailor-made for these applications, delivering the high bandwidth and small size they need,” said Anup Sidhu, director of SPI product marketing at Cypress. “This new product reaffirms Cypress’s commitment to expanding our market-leading portfolio of high-performance NOR Flash for embedded systems.”

Availability Cypress’ 256Mb FL-L Quad SPI NOR Flash is sampling now in compact 24-ball BGA, 16-pin SOIC and 8-contact WSON packages. Production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2016.
