Phoenix Technology News, Beijing time, April 19, according to technology website CNET, HTC camera R&D director Symon Whitehorn recently told wireless operator Vodafone that the company is expected to launch a smartphone with a camera with optical zoom function in 18-24 months. Whitehorn
said that the current optical zoom function has become a barrier between smartphones and digital SLR cameras. He said that HTC may introduce optical zoom function into smartphone product design within two years. "I think we will achieve this goal within 18 months to two years, until the boundary between smartphone cameras and professional cameras begins to blur, and it is difficult for people to continue to exclude smartphone cameras in the name of "professional use" or nostalgia." Whitehorn said. Around the world
, smartphones have become the most popular cameras. Whitehorn believes that in some cases, the camera function of smartphones has actually surpassed that of point-and-shoot cameras. Therefore, in the future, after the camera is equipped with optical zoom function, the high-end digital SLR camera-level image pictures that smartphones can provide will far surpass point-and-shoot cameras.
However, there are still doubts about whether the camera function of smartphones can surpass high-end digital cameras, such as SLR devices from Canon or Nokia, because the latter can replace a variety of lenses, while smartphones do not seem to be able to solve this problem. These additional devices are too heavy. But Whitehorn believes that these are not problems and can be overcome one by one.
"Two years ago I predicted that mobile phones would never replace digital SLR cameras! But now I am not so sure. I think professional cameras will always have their unique uses, such as sports photography. But I think the gap between the two will gradually narrow." Whitehorn said. (Compiled by Ruoshui)
