Samsung Electronics is preparing to launch Compute Express Link (CXL) DRAM cutting-edge technology in March, aiming to increase data processing speed and consolidate its leading position in the AI memory chip market.
The chip giant also plans to strengthen the competitiveness of its foundry business by strengthening cooperation with chip design company Arm, which is seeing increasing demand for artificial intelligence chips, company and industry officials said on Sunday.
The developments come as Samsung Electronics faces stiff competition from domestic rival SK Hynix, which has established a dominant position in artificial intelligence memory chips, especially its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. In addition, in terms of foundry business, TSMC, the world's largest foundry company, is experiencing a surge in semiconductor manufacturing orders in the AI era, further consolidating its position. At the same time, Samsung's U.S. rival Intel is stepping up its efforts in the foundry business, posing additional challenges to Samsung.
In order to enhance its competitiveness in the field of AI memory chips, Samsung plans to showcase its technology and vision for CXL DRAM, known as HBM next-generation technology, at the MemCon 2024 global semiconductor conference to be held in Silicon Valley next month.
Samsung Executive Vice President Han Jin-man will deliver opening remarks at the two-day event, which will take place on March 26 and 27. In addition, the company's executive vice president Choi Jin-hyeok will share Samsung's CXL technology and vision in a keynote speech titled "Leading HBM and CXL Innovation in the AI Era to Achieve High Memory Bandwidth and High Capacity Implementation."
CXL is a next-generation technology standard that effectively connects disparate devices in applications requiring high-performance computing, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data. As the amount of data that needs to be processed across devices grows exponentially and the role of data center servers continues to expand, there is an increasing need for a greater number and variety of devices to collaborate on a single task. CXL technology is expected to effectively address this challenge by facilitating seamless communication and collaboration between different devices.
With CXL DRAM products expected to launch this year, Choi's presentation at MemCon 2024 is bound to have a major impact on the semiconductor industry. Market research firm Yole Group predicts that the global CXL market will grow significantly and reach approximately US$15 billion by 2028.
Samsung currently holds a solid leadership position in the CXL market, which is still in its infancy. The company was the first in the industry to launch CXL DRAM in 2021 and is expected to launch CXL 2.0 DRAM in the second quarter of this year.
"Recently I have been feeling that artificial intelligence is at the core of all companies, and I have recently noticed that storage semiconductors will play a greater leading role in the era of artificial intelligence," Han told reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show. Released in January. He added that he expects the growth in AI semiconductors to spread not only to HBM, which is currently growing, but also to CXL.
