Wuhan breaks out of chip unicorn

According to Qichacha, Wuhan Xinxin Company has recently undergone industrial and commercial changes. The list of new shareholders includes 30 shareholders including Wuhan Optics Valley Semiconductor Industry Investment, Bank of China, Hubei Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, Hubei Science and Technology Investment, and CITIC Securities Investment. The lineup is luxurious.
According to the official website, Wuhan Xinxin is located in Wuhan East Lake High-tech Zone, the "Optics Valley of China", and provides 12-inch NOR Flash, CIS and Logic wafer foundry and technical services in 40nm and above processes to global customers.
Wuhan’s “core” territory is growing. As one of the earliest cities in China to develop the chip industry, it has not only attracted many chip start-up companies to settle here in recent years, but has also quietly given birth to a group of chip unicorns.

Samsung worker falls to death from chip factory

In January 2024, an employee fell and died at the P4 factory in Samsung's Pyeongtaek Industrial Park in South Korea. The Pyeongtaek Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, said on March 3 that it was investigating Samsung Engineering Company employees and subcontractor officials for suspected negligence of duty, which indirectly led to the death of a worker.
At 9:45 am local time on January 2, 2024, an accident occurred at the construction site of the Samsung P4 semiconductor factory complex. The building where the accident occurred has eight floors (82 meters). It is currently being constructed by Samsung Engineering Company, and pipeline connections were in progress at the time. A worker fell from a height of 7 meters and died. Due to the nature of the semiconductor factory, each floor is very high. The employee who died was working on the sixth floor and fell from a height of 7 meters.
According to the investigation by the South Korean police, the number of people involved in the case is increasing. Police said safety managers may be responsible for the accident given regular safety training, site management supervision and whether safety facilities are in place.
Samsung Pyeongtaek P4 wafer fab plans to start operations as early as 2024. It will be equipped with wafer foundry and DRAM and NAND chip production lines. The project has been mostly completed. Currently, Samsung has decided to postpone the construction of PH2 clean room and prioritize the construction of DRAM, etc. PH3 clean room for production line preparation. In addition, Samsung is also accelerating investment in P5 and P6 factories.
