Analog Devices (ADI) announced a collaboration with Elgama-Elektronika, a Lithuanian electricity meter manufacturer. Elgama will design meters using ADI’s mSure®
diagnostic
technology to help power companies remotely monitor meter accuracy. This will extend the life of the meters while reducing the overall cost of meter sampling and testing. In addition, with electricity theft caused by meter tampering accounting for 10% of the total electricity theft worldwide, and power companies in Europe alone losing nearly $100 billion in revenue in this regard, ADI’s mSure technology can provide practical intelligent features to help confirm various types of meter tampering events. Elgama plans to bring these meters to market by the end of 2020.

“Information gained from directly measuring meter health can help utilities make quick and confident decisions by identifying meters that are behaving abnormally, detecting meter failures, and confirming and quantifying more tampering events. mSure is a promising solution that can help achieve these goals while optimizing meter recheck costs,” said Dr. Nerijus Kruopis, CTO of Elgama- Elektronika. “ADI has deep expertise in this area and understands our challenges. Field accuracy verification can be a significant cost burden and inconvenience for customers. mSure-enabled meters can check the accuracy of the entire metering function while in the field, saving costs and improving customer service. We are already eager to begin technical exchanges with several utilities in the market to help drive the implementation of mSure technology as a standard practice for ensuring higher meter accuracy.”
Currently, utilities conduct on-site inspections of meters in use over the life of the meter, replace healthy meters based on age rather than on demand, and deal with false theft alerts. mSure, combined with analytics services, can directly monitor meter accuracy and report on the health of each meter, helping to identify faulty meters and additional meter tampering events. The raw data generated by mSure-enabled meters is provided to a cloud-based analytics service platform for processing, allowing utilities to run reports on the entire meter network at desired intervals.
“We are excited to see companies like Elgama adopt our meter health technology to meet the needs of their utility customers. mSure enables utilities to both monitor individual meter accuracy and better prevent revenue loss through advanced meter tamper detection,” said Vitaly Goltsberg, director of ADI’s Energy Business Unit. “ADI’s edge-to-cloud meter analytics solutions provide utilities with actionable intelligence that helps them reduce operating costs and capital expenditures, mitigate risk, protect revenue, and increase brand trust.”
