Recently, Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of Google Devices and Services, confirmed that the company has successfully acquired Raxium.
Raxium is a five-year-old startup based in Fremont, California that develops MicroLED displays for AR headsets and similar devices.
MicroLED is an emerging technology with great potential, but most of its applications are for large screens such as wall-mounted signs.
The startup has yet to launch any products, but it has reportedly developed a more efficient manufacturing technology for MicroLEDs that could reduce production costs. MicroLEDs have the potential to be used in devices like smart glasses and could also be used in VR.
Google’s acquisition of Raxium shows that the company is serious about developing the components needed to make AR devices a reality. The Information first broke the news of the acquisition and reported that Google has paid $1 billion for the startup.
