Although Microsoft and Micron announced earlier that they had obtained permission from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Google's GMS is the key to Huawei's smartphone business. Now that it cannot cooperate with Google, Huawei will build its own HMS ecosystem in 2020 to replace Google GMS, and many domestic companies will also benefit from it.
Huawei HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) was officially proposed at the HDC Developer Conference in August 2019. It is similar to Google's GMS mobile service, but has more overall functions. It is a collection of Huawei's terminal cloud service open capabilities, totaling 14 services, including 9 basic services and 5 growth services. Developers only need to integrate the HMS SDK to use Huawei's multiple open capabilities, including Huawei account, in-app payment, message push, friend relationship and other capabilities.
Taking the map function as an example, Huawei will provide developers with 25 API interfaces in 6 categories, covering more than 150 countries and regions around the world, supporting more than 40 languages, helping global developers to achieve personalized map presentation and interaction.
In addition, HMS has functions that GMS does not have, such as the unified scanning service Scan Kit, which supports the recognition and analysis of 13 mainstream QR codes and barcodes in the world, and supports the detection and adaptive magnification of long-distance codes.
In the New Year's letter to consumers two days ago, Huawei Consumer Business CEO Yu Chengdong proposed that Huawei will focus on building Huawei Terminal Cloud Service (HMS) this year, which now covers more than 170 countries and regions around the world, with 400 million monthly active users.
Yu Chengdong emphasized that Huawei is committed to globalization, giving priority to solving overseas ecological problems, not pursuing short-term commercial interests, and gradually restoring the total overseas business volume within a few years.
At the same time, we will accelerate the building of HMS Core capabilities, lay a solid ecological foundation, and form a new system of "self-developed chips + Hongmeng OS".
