A new video has taken a closer look at Apple's new Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable, and gives us a glimpse at the premium components that went into Apple's design.
When Apple launched the Mac Studio and Studio Display in March, they quietly introduced a new Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable. The 1.8-meter cable costs $99 and is capable of up to 40Gb/s data transfer and supports charging at up to 100W.
A new teardown video released by ChargerLab highlights the high-quality materials and construction required to build this cable.
This is a coaxial cable with 19 conductors. Six of the wires are tinned copper wires used for power. Additionally, two of the wires support USB 2.0 transmission, making the cable backward compatible with Thunderbolt 3, USB 3, and USB 2. Many of the wires are plated with both copper and silver.
The connectors themselves also feature high-quality components contained in a durable brass shell, and each connector also features 24 gold-plated pins. Inside the connector is an Intel chip for signal reconstruction and signal fluctuation reduction, and the outside of the wires are wrapped in a waterproof and dust-resistant braided material for added durability.
ChargerLab notes that this wire performs very well, but may not be useful for standard customers, who will be fine with cheaper alternative wires.
However, ChargerLab says that for creatives working with large amounts of data, this may be the best option currently available.
