If the clamp meter (multimeter) does not measure but there are still numbers, is it a malfunction? [Copy link]

I would like to ask if the clamp meter (multimeter) is faulty if there are still numbers when it is not measuring? It keeps jumping back and forth, sometimes large and sometimes small.

Judging from the appearance, it has been in service for quite a while. The surface is smooth and old. Just replace it. It will affect the accuracy of the test and measurement. Anyway, it is not very expensive.  Details Published on 2019-10-19 16:22

From the photo, it looks like it is set to 200A.

If the clamp meter is not placed in a strong external magnetic field, the reading of this range should be close to zero.

It may be that the contact is poor, try rotating it repeatedly. My old digital multimeter has not been used for a long time, and the contact is oxidized and in poor contact, resulting in random value jumps after turning it on. Slight oxidation can be improved by repeatedly rotating the gear dial and scraping off the oxide layer, but heavy oxidation requires disassembly, and if it is too serious, it can only be scrapped.
