On the morning of April 24, Sony's next-generation noise-cancelling headphones WH-1000XM5 have been leaked before they were released. As the flagship product of this series, this generation finally adopted a new design and has improved specifications.

According to German media TechnikNews, the successor to Sony WH-1000XM4 will be redesigned, and the narrower hinge arm will be connected to the headphone cover, which is actually reminiscent of its competitor Bose. Therefore, some people speculate that the redesigned headband part is metal instead of plastic.

The earmuff padding seems to be more substantial, but Sony no longer seems to support the design of foldable headphones, which seems to be a step backwards... The previous folding design actually took up less space.

Its battery life will be increased. According to retail industry sources, the WH-1000XM5 has a battery life of up to 40 hours when the active noise reduction function is turned on, which is 10 hours longer than the XM4. However, the total charging time using the USB-C interface is 3.5 hours, which is 30 minutes longer than the current generation.

In terms of other components, the positions of the three microphones have been redesigned, and the NC/Ambient button replaces the "Custom" button on the XM4, but the button may still be reprogrammed through the App to activate the voice assistant, etc. It is said that the biggest change with this band is an additional ANC active noise reduction processor and a new sound driver, indicating improved noise reduction and sound, but there are few details in this regard.

The release date of the XM5 headphones is still unknown. This product appeared in the FCC approval documents a while ago and may be released in the near future. Currently, the main competitor of Sony's XM series headphones is Apple AirPods Max. Sony XM4 is much more popular than Apple's headphones at $549 with a price of $349.

It is said that AirPods Max will also have a streamlined version, removing some functions and lowering the price.
