IT Home reported on April 17 that in Windows 10 system, users can manually turn on the clock seconds of the taskbar through the registry value "ShowSecondsInSystemClock", but this function is cancelled in Windows 11.
Recently, Microsoft explained the change. According to Microsoft officials, the feature has been completely removed, one of the reasons being performance.
Microsoft said that although today's computers have more memory and displaying seconds is not a problem, the frequent updates required to display seconds on the taskbar will still make users' devices slower than usual.
In devices with multi-user support, Windows will try to update the taskbar clock once per second. Since each logged in user has his own taskbar clock, this means that Windows will divide the stack into one hundred to draw one hundred taskbar clocks, which will affect CPU usage.
Another major issue is that periodic activity caused by the taskbar clock can prevent the CPU from entering low-power mode in Windows 11. Microsoft is constantly working to reduce periodic activity, which is why the system's minimum periodic timer is one minute.
“We’re sorry, but this isn’t a supported registry key value for Windows 11. Thank you for your feedback, which we’ll continue to use to guide the future of the clock,” Microsoft said.
