On the morning of January 11, some rumors mentioned that the yet-to-be-released iPhone 14 is expected to be equipped with a "pill"-shaped under-screen lens module, rather than the bangs shape that has been used since 2017.
Although the next iPhone is still several months away from release, rumors have already begun, with developer Jeff Grossman showing on his Twitter what the pill-shaped hole on the iPhone will look like. Instead of being connected to the device's frame like a bangs, the hole is located in the center below the frame, with a shorter length and height, providing more screen space on both sides.
On this year's iPhone 13, Apple has actually reduced the notch, but the extra space is not actually used. For example, the battery percentage still cannot be displayed in the status bar, but must be swiped down to enter the control center to see it. Some people would think that with the pill-shaped opening, Apple can allow users to display more information in the status bar.
The notch has been the iconic design language of the iPhone since the iPhone X, and the pill-shaped hole will mark a major shift in design. This design requires Apple to install multiple sensors and the original depth-sensing lens system in a smaller space.
Rumors so far have suggested that only the higher-end iPhone 14 Pro series models will feature a pill-shaped hole, while the lower-end models will continue to feature a full-size notch, although this is not the case.
Further rumors suggest that starting with next year's iPhone 15, there may not be a need for any form of notch or hole, as Apple looks to place Face ID and related sensors under the display.
