According to foreign media reports, a source at Telefónica revealed that the company has purchased 5G network equipment from Swedish communications supplier Ericsson to replace some Huawei equipment. It is said that replacing the next-generation mobile network equipment is part of Telefónica's supplier diversification strategy announced in 2019.
In December 2019, Telefónica said that it plans to significantly reduce the use of Huawei components in the construction of its 5G core network. Its CTIO (Technology and Information Chief Executive Officer) Enrique Blanco said that the 5G network core equipment is the most sensitive part of the communication network. For the sake of data protection and service security, Telefónic will purchase 5G core components from several different suppliers in Germany and the local area. He said: "When the core comes from a single supplier, the failure of one part is likely to cause the entire network to stop operating."
