Vietnam plans to issue 5G wireless service licenses in 2022 after a delay caused by the pandemic, with coverage starting in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other urban areas.
According to Nikkei, the country's three major operators, Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone, will enter the market and have launched trial services in 16 provinces and cities. In addition to large cities, the service will initially be provided in areas with high demand such as industrial parks. Commercial services were expected to start in 2020, but the epidemic and other factors have delayed the installation of base stations.
5G wireless communications, which are 100 times faster than 4G, are expected to boost Vietnam's digital economy as the government pushes for a shift toward high-tech manufacturing. Vietnam's major telecom operators have agreed to share 5G infrastructure to ease capital investment. Industry leader Viettel is also developing its own 5G equipment and networks and may choose to use in-house products from overseas group telecom suppliers.
