According to sources in the semiconductor industry, Samsung Electronics has received a contract from STMicroelectronics to produce MCUs for Apple's next-generation iPhone using a 16nm process. This is the first time that STMicroelectronics has outsourced MCU production for major customers such as Apple.
According to the Korea Economic Daily, amid global supply shortages, the MCU is manufactured using a 16nm manufacturing process, meaning its specifications will be smaller and more power dense than traditional MCUs. Samsung declined to confirm whether it had received the order, and details such as the order value are currently unknown.
The report pointed out that this foundry order has triggered expectations that Samsung is expanding its influence in the foundry market dominated by TSMC, which controls 70% of MCU outsourcing production. Both companies are the world's two largest foundries.
Late last month, Samsung formally announced plans to build a $17 billion chip manufacturing plant in Tyler, Texas, as part of a plan to overtake TSMC.
