Chinese manufacturers enter DDR3 market, Changxin Memory to supply GigaDevice in November

As Samsung Electronics and other major DRAM chip makers plan to phase out DDR3 production lines, the number of suppliers has dropped sharply, and Chinese manufacturers are planning to make a big push into the DDR3 market.

According to Electronic Times, citing industry insiders, starting from November this year, Changxin Memory will begin to provide production capacity for Nor Flash supplier GigaDevice's DDR3 products, and the two parties plan to cooperate to enter the DDR3 field.

The person further pointed out that Changxin Memory will mainly use the 17nm process technology to produce DDR3 memory. The product is currently still being verified at the OSAT factory located in China. It is expected that from the second half of the first quarter of 2022, the OSAT factory will increase the production of DDR3.

In addition to GigaDevice, Taiwan's Jinghao and Etron have also cooperated with foundries such as Powerchip to produce DDR3 products, while Nanya and Winbond produce DDR3 products on their own. It is speculated that some major packaging and testing companies have already received orders for DDR3 memory from Chinese chip manufacturers.

Sources said it remains to be seen whether DDR3 prices will be more stable than mainstream DDR4 prices next year as Chinese companies launch an offensive in the DDR3 market segment.
