An expert witness for Epic Games testified that Apple's App Store is a lucrative service with profit margins approaching 80%.

Ahead of Apple's May 3 trial against Epic Games, details of the two companies' financial dealings and activities are coming to light, with neither side set to make opening arguments. In the latest revelations, an expert witness for Epic appears to think Apple makes a lot of money from the App Store.

Financial researcher Ned Barnes testified that the App Store's operating profit margin is very high and has been so for many years. According to Bloomberg, the documents discovered by the expert show that the App Store's operating profit margin was 77.8% in 2019 and 74.9% in 2018.

The data was allegedly obtained from "documents prepared by Apple's financial planning and analysis group and derived from documents of Apple CEO Tim Cook."

Barnes said those percentages weren't necessarily completely accurate because an Apple employee told him they didn't tell the whole story, but he later calculated new estimates and found profit margins closer to 79.6% for both years.
