According to data collected by SellCell, Apple's iPhone 12 series retains its value more than 20% better than Samsung's Galaxy S21 series.
Even though the Samsung Galaxy S21 series has been on sale for a much shorter time than the iPhone 12 series, its value retention isn't as high as that of its main competitor.
By weighing each phone’s MSRP and its monthly and total depreciation against the value of “good” and “used” devices, SellCell is able to accurately calculate the depreciation of each phone.
The iPhone 12 series has lost 18.1% to 33.7% of its value since its release in October 2020. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S21 series has depreciated significantly by 44.8% to 57.1% since its release in January 2021.
The 64GB iPhone 12 and 512GB iPhone 12 Pro lost the most value, with a depreciation rate of 33.7%, while the 128GB iPhone 12 Pro Max lost the least, with a depreciation rate of only 18.1%. The 512GB iPhone 12 Pro Max, as the most expensive iPhone 12 model, still performed much better than the equivalent most expensive Samsung Galaxy S21 device, which lost 53.3% in value.
Similar losses were seen across the S21 lineup, with the 128GB Galaxy S21 losing 50.8% of its value and the 256GB model losing 57.1%. Even though the Samsung S21 phones were only released in January 2021, all of them have lost nearly 50% of their value, which seems like a very large depreciation considering they've only been on the market for three months.
