The latest report from market research firm Counterpoint shows that 5G smartphone sales accounted for 13.5% of total smartphone sales in the United States in August 2020, while the figure was only 3% in January 2020.

It is reported that Jeff Fieldhack, research director of Counterpoint, said: "5G penetration was only about 1% in 2019. However, it has grown steadily this year as more and more OEMs launch 5G devices. In addition, as 5G chips continue to lower price levels, we expect more OEMs to launch 5G devices."
Fieldhack added, “The biggest shift in the 5G smartphone market will occur when Apple launches its latest iPhone. Apple has a market share of over 40% in the U.S., and when Apple starts selling 5G iPhones, it will significantly increase the market share of 5G devices. Overall, we expect 5G smartphones to account for about 20% of total sales in 2020.”

Counterpoint also analyzed that in the past year, the average selling price of 5G smartphones has dropped from $1,075 to $730. Samsung is the first manufacturer to launch a 5G smartphone priced below $600. The Galaxy A51 5G went on sale in August at a price of only $499.99. It is expected that in the second half of 2020, more OEMs will begin to offer affordable 5G smartphones.
In addition, Counterpoint said that the most popular 5G smartphone in the US market so far in 2020 is the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus 5G. Although the epidemic caused S20 sales to slow down at the beginning, sales increased in June and July due to suppressed demand and stimulus funds.
