It is well known that Samsung is working on the Exynos 1000, which will eventually succeed the Exynos 990. We should expect it to have a real performance and efficiency improvement over the previous generation chipset, and we believe one of the contributing factors will be thanks to ARM's Cortex-A78 core. According to a gossip source, we may see this.
According to the leaker Ice Universe, Samsung will release an Exynos chipset with ARM Cortex-A78 core in 2020. Ice Universe did not reveal the specific release date, but assuming Samsung launches it on time, we may see it debut later this month. Now, we are not sure whether the upcoming SoC will be the Exynos 1000. There are reports that the Exynos 1000 will utilize ARM's Cortex-A78 core, but at the same time, there are rumors that it will use the more powerful Cortex-X1 core to reach a new performance threshold.
This core will likely be used as part of the Snapdragon 875 CPU cluster, but Ice Universe does mention that the Exynos 1000 won't be faster than the Snapdragon 875, but it will significantly narrow that gap while also showing improvements in efficiency. But then again, before we get too excited, note that Samsung announced the Exynos 990 in October, not September, so this month, there's a chance that instead of the Exynos 1000, we'll see a less powerful, but still capable chip. Hopefully Samsung will surprise us this week or next.
