On the evening of September 3, Huawei held a speech event at IFA 2020 with the theme of "Vision and Commitment to Europe". Walter Gee, President of Huawei Consumer Business Group Europe, announced at the event that App Gallery, an application store developed by Huawei, has 33 million users in Europe. The Kirin 9000 chip that the industry expected did not appear.
App Gallery has 33 million users in Europe
Walter Gee, President of Huawei Consumer Business Group Europe, mentioned Huawei's "1+8+N" full-scenario strategy again in his speech. He said that Huawei's mobile ecosystem is a key part of this strategy.
It is said that Huawei currently has more than 800 partners and more than 100 product categories. Walter Ji said that Huawei has invested more than $82 billion in research and development in the past decade. Starting from 2018, Huawei plans to increase its R&D investment by an additional $100 billion in the next five years.
App Gallery is an alternative application platform to Google Play with 480 million monthly users worldwide, 33 million of which are in Europe. Due to restrictions by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Huawei can no longer access Google services on its latest smartphones, including the Play Store. In addition to claiming to be the third largest app store, Huawei has 1.6 million registered developers, up 76% from the first half of last year, with more than 5,000 apps available each month.
Huawei created 223,000 jobs in Europe in 2019
Europe will be an important market for Huawei in the next decade. Huawei created 223,000 jobs in the European market in 2019 and currently has 8,500 workers in 11 European countries. Huawei has two headquarters in Europe, one in Poland and the other in Germany. Since 2010, Huawei has invested more than US$1 billion in innovative research projects in Europe and has reached cooperation with more than 100 research institutions and universities in the fields of computers and other fields.
Huawei also plans to open more offline sales stores in Europe, including 8 flagship stores and 42 experience stores.
During the event, Huawei also demonstrated Storysign, an AI-based app that translates children's books into sign language. It was launched last year and is now available for free on Android and iOS.
In this keynote speech, Huawei did not release the new generation of Kirin chips or other new products as usual. According to the rules of previous years, Huawei usually launches Kirin chips at IFA and releases the flagship Mate series of mobile phones at the end of September. It seems that the Huawei Developer Conference on September 10 will be the highlight.
