On the morning of August 25, according to display analyst Ross Young and whistleblower Jon Prosser, due to supply chain problems with 120Hz displays, Apple may postpone the release of the iPhone 12 Pro or cancel the feature on the new phone.
Young explained in a tweet:
We heard that Apple could get a 120Hz display panel, but not a 120Hz driver IC. So they either have to wait for a 120Hz driver IC, which would obviously delay the release, or go with a 60Hz panel. We heard they'll go with 60Hz.
Young speculates that the supply issues facing the iPhone 12 Pro may be because it was not part of the original plan for the device. It is not clear how long this delay will last. Apple confirmed during its July earnings call that this year's iPhone is expected to be released later than in previous years.
Another whistleblower, Jon Prosser, confirmed Young’s analysis today:
Behind the scenes, Apple is still testing 120Hz ProMotion displays for the iPhone 12 Pro, and like my sources, the 12 Pro Max will get them.
The ProMotion technology on the previous iPad Pro can dynamically adjust the display according to the display of the content, thereby achieving a smoother display effect. The screen refresh rate will change according to the content on the screen to save power.
In July, Young said that none of his sources could confirm rumors that the iPhone 12 Pro models would have 120Hz displays, so he believes Apple will adopt ProMotion on the iPhone in 2021, while also adopting a low-power LTPO display (currently the same screen on the Apple Watch Series 5), which will support the refresh rate to extend battery life.
It's unusual for Apple to face uncertainty about major features at such a late stage, and since a 120Hz display isn't an integral design feature of the iPhone 12 Pro, the odds are higher that this fall's iPhones will feature a 60Hz screen.
Before Apple, Samsung has added a 120Hz dynamic refresh screen to its new flagship Note20 series, which is also an advantage that Samsung's display department brings to mobile phones.
