Since the beginning of this year, the mobile phone industry has undoubtedly been hit hard by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rhythm of new phone launches by most manufacturers has been disrupted, and weak market demand has become the norm. Many institutions have stated that this year, the global smartphone market will shrink by 2.28%, with shipments just over 1.3 billion units; at the same time, in the first half of the year, global smartphone shipments will drop by 10.6% year-on-year.

However, according to the latest data released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the decline in domestic mobile phone shipments in the first half of the year is expanding, and the monthly shipments of 5G mobile phones account for more than 60%. On July 10, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology released an analysis report on the operation of the domestic mobile phone market in June 2020. In June 2020, the total shipments of the domestic mobile phone market were 28.63 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 16.6%; from January to June this year, the total shipments of the domestic mobile phone market totaled 153 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 17.7%.

In terms of 5G mobile phones, the domestic market shipped 17.513 million 5G mobile phones in June, accounting for 61.2% of the total mobile phone shipments in the same period; 24 new models were launched, accounting for 51.1% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period. From January to June, the domestic market shipped 63.597 million 5G mobile phones and launched 105 new models, accounting for 41.5% and 48.6% respectively.

In terms of brand composition, domestic brand mobile phone shipments in June were 27.283 million units, down 16.5% year-on-year, accounting for 95.3% of mobile phone shipments in the same period; 46 new models were launched, up 24.3% year-on-year, accounting for 97.9% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period. From January to June, domestic brand mobile phone shipments totaled 139 million units, down 19.2% year-on-year, accounting for 91.0% of mobile phone shipments in the same period; 198 new models were launched, down 10.4% year-on-year, accounting for 91.7% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period.

In addition, smartphone shipments in June were 27.706 million units, down 16.6% year-on-year, accounting for 96.8% of mobile phone shipments in the same period. From January to June, the cumulative shipments of smartphones were 149 million units, down 16.1% year-on-year, accounting for 97.3% of mobile phone shipments in the same period. 36 new smartphone models were launched, up 33.3% year-on-year, accounting for 76.6% of the number of new mobile phone models launched in the same period. From January to June, a total of 167 new smartphone models were launched, down 13.0% year-on-year, accounting for 77.3% of the number of new models launched in the same period.
