According to Taiwan media Central News Agency, the latest report from market research firm Gartner predicts that overall mobile phone shipments this year will decline by 14.6%, and the penetration rate of 5G mobile phones will be about 11%.
Gartner predicts that the total shipments of personal computers (PCs), tablets and mobile phones will drop to 1.9 billion units this year, a year-on-year decrease of 13.6%. Among them, the overall mobile phone shipments will decrease by 14.6% year-on-year to 1.5 billion units. And the shipments of smartphones will reach 1.3 billion units, a decrease of 13.7% from last year.
As for the reasons for the decrease in mobile phone shipments, Gartner believes that on the one hand, the epidemic has reduced people's disposable income and consumption capacity; on the other hand, the service life of mobile phones will be further extended from 2.5 years in 2018 to 2.7 years this year.
As for 5G mobile phones, Gartner pointed out that some 5G flagship phones continue to face shipment delays. In addition, the rising 5G coverage and 5G mobile phone costs will affect the development of 5G mobile phones. It is expected that the penetration rate of 5G mobile phones this year will be about 11%.
In addition, Gartner expects PC shipments to decrease by 10.5% this year. Due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, remote work and online education have increased, driving up demand for laptops and tablets. Therefore, the decrease in shipments should be less severe than the overall PC market.
