A week ago, Sony officially announced that the next-generation console is PlayStation 5 (hereinafter referred to as PS5), which will be launched at the end of 2020. The handle will be completely redesigned and will include more vibration feedback effects.
The processor of the PS5 console will also be greatly upgraded, and it will still be customized by AMD . This time, it can use AMD's latest CPU and GPU , including the 8-core Zen2 CPU with 7nm process and the Radeon GPU with RDNA architecture. It was previously revealed that the GPU frequency can reach 2GHz and the floating-point performance can reach 9.2TFLOPS. The performance is higher than the RX 5700 graphics card and close to the RX 5700 XT graphics card.
Compared with the K10 architecture "Lynx" core used in the PS4 console, the PS5 will use the latest 7nm Zen2 architecture, which is also at the same level as the Ryzen 3000 processor. However, the latest news says that the PS5's CPU is actually more powerful, using AMD's customized version of the Zen2+ architecture.
There is no specific information about the Zen2+ architecture yet, and we don't know what AMD has improved. However, it is not surprising for AMD to customize enhanced CPUs or GPUs for customers. AMD has done similar things on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, adding functions or instruction sets different from the desktop version to the CPU or GPU.
For desktop users, AMD's customized Zen2+ architecture is unlikely to be used in consumer-grade CPUs. When the new generation of consoles is launched in 2020, AMD should directly launch Zen3 architecture processors according to the schedule, so there is no need to worry about how powerful this enhanced Zen2+ core is, if there really is such a Zen2+ core.
