Recently, Jiwei.com learned through patent database monitoring that OPPO has acquired a batch of patents from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. After careful analysis, the author found that these are high-value patents for 4G and LTE. The author estimates that this batch of patents was acquired by OPPO from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and OPPO continues to expand its patent arsenal.
Jiwei.com found in monitoring the patent database that OPPO has acquired at least 15 patents from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, including 13 Chinese patents, 1 US patent, and 1 Japanese patent, and these patents are all high-value patents related to 4G and LTE. Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications has strong R&D capabilities in the field of mobile communications and is a member of the International Organization for Standardization 3GPP. It has submitted many proposals and applied for many 4G and LTE core patents.
Now that 5G licenses have been issued, why does OPPO still want to acquire 4G-related patents? This is because 5G will not completely replace 4G and WiFi, but will integrate 4G, WiFi and other networks into it to bring users a richer experience. By integrating 4G, WiFi, etc. into 5G, users do not need to worry about the network they are in, and no longer need to manually connect to the WiFi network. The system will automatically connect to the network with the best experience based on the on-site network quality, truly realizing seamless switching.
Precisely because 5G has entered the commercial stage, many organizations have invested in the research and development of 6G, and the acquisition of 4G-related patents has become easier.
Although 5G licenses have been issued, the construction of 5G base stations is insufficient at this stage. This year's 5G mobile phones are mainly flagship-level. Due to the high price of general modules, the price of 5G mobile phones will be more than 5,000 yuan. As the price of general modules drops, by the middle of next year, the price of 5G mobile phones will drop to around 3,000 yuan, and it is expected to drop to around 1,000-2,000 by the end of next year. Before the full construction of 5G is completed, 4G still has a bonus period, so OPPO chose to acquire 4G-related patents at this stage.
OPPO is also ready for 5G and will launch the first batch of 5G mobile phones. China's 5G smartphone market will reach tens of millions to hundreds of millions in 2020. It is expected that the market space for pan-intelligent terminals will reach tens of millions in 2021.
