New Devices Target Tablets, Smartphones, Laptops and Other USB-C and Power Applications
July 24, 2018 - ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ON ), driving energy-efficient innovation, has introduced two new products that can be used together in USB-C (Type-C) applications and also provide advantages in other modern power applications. The new devices are the FSA4480, a USB Type-C analog audio switch with integrated protection , and the NCS21x series of current sense amplifiers .
The FSA4480 is a high-performance USB Type-C port multimedia switch that supports analog audio headsets, allowing universal USB Type-C ports to transmit USB2.0 signals, analog audio, and analog microphone signals. The device supports audio detection paths and is a fully integrated and optimized solution that simplifies the introduction of design and minimizes the footprint of the entire solution. It integrates high-voltage protection up to 20 volts (V) DC power supply and supports pin output of OMTP and CTIA (sometimes referred to as American Headphone Jack (AHJ)) smartphone headset standards. Overvoltage protection (OVP) is integrated on the common node pins, and the unplugging of any audio device is automatically detected.
The FSA4480 integrates an I2C interface and is easily controlled by a host processor, greatly reducing audio pops and clicks caused by changes. The device is packaged in a small WLCSP chip package, measuring only 2.24 mm x 2.28 mm x 0.5 mm, making it ideal for space-constrained mobile applications such as smartphones , tablets, digital cameras and speakers. It can also be used in computing devices including laptops, desktop computers and hybrid laptops .
The NCS21x series of bidirectional current sense amplifiers include integrated, highly matched precision resistors to provide accurate and compact system designs for measuring small differential voltages. These devices can detect common-mode voltages in the range of -0.3 to 26 V and are suitable for high-side and low-side current sensing. The zero-drift architecture of the NCS21xR provides low input offset voltage (as low as 35 uV) and low offset drift (as low as 0.5 uV/°C). Combining these devices with devices with integrated gain settings can detect small voltage drops across shunts, providing high gain accuracy and excellent temperature performance.

“Our new multimedia switches and current sense amplifiers play an important role in managing the USB Type-C interface in modern mobile devices,” said Wiren Perera, director of IoT at ON Semiconductor. “The highly integrated design, low power operation and small size make them ideal for tablets and smartphones where space is constrained and power budgets are critical. In addition, these current sense amplifiers help control power consumption in larger applications, including white goods and electric vehicles.”
