In the control system of servo motors, in order to achieve high-precision control requirements, real-time detection of the motor rotor position is often the key to solving the problem. Photoelectric encoder method, rotary transformer method, Hall sensor method are several commonly used methods for detecting the motor rotor position. Although the photoelectric encoder has the advantage of high detection accuracy, it has the disadvantages of poor stability and anti-interference, so it is not suitable for use in occasions with relatively harsh conditions; while the rotary transformer has the characteristics of simple structure, durability, and strong anti-interference, so it is widely used in various occasions with harsh conditions.

Resolver Principle

SC2161 is a high-resolution resolver digital converter with a resolution of 10 to 16 bits. It can provide sine wave excitation for the resolver by integrating an on-chip programmable sine wave oscillator. The maximum tracking rate can reach 3125rps (10-bit resolution), the accuracy is 2.5 arc minutes, parallel and serial 10 to 16-bit data ports, and the chip is rated for a temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, making it very suitable for industrial design and high-precision applications.

SC2161 resolver product features:

1. Ratio tracking conversion Type II tracking loop can continuously output position data without conversion delay. It can also suppress noise and provide harmonic distortion tolerance of reference and input signals.

2. System fault detection: The fault detection circuit can detect the loss of signal of the resolver, out-of-range input signal, input signal mismatch or position tracking loss. Each fault detection threshold can be programmed by the user individually to optimize for specific applications.

3. Input signal range: The sine and cosine inputs support a differential input voltage of 3.15Vp-p ±27%.

4. Programmable excitation frequency: The excitation frequency can be easily set to multiple standard frequencies in the range of 2kHz to 20kHz.

5. Position data in 3 formats: 10-bit to 16-bit absolute angular position data can be accessed through a 16-bit parallel port or a 4-wire serial interface. Incremental encoder emulation uses the standard A-quad-B format and provides direction output.

6. Digital speed output: 10-bit to 16-bit signed digital speed can be accessed through a 16-bit parallel port or a 4-wire serial interface.


There are two ways to connect SC2161 and DSP, namely configuration mode and normal mode. Since SC2161 supports 2.3V~5V logic level, it can be directly connected to DSP, avoiding the intermediate logic level conversion link.
